Hey kids, remember when Captain Jack Sparrow was a cinematic breath of fresh air before predictably devolving into a tiresome gimmick? (Pepperidge Farms remembers!) But yeah, this movie is better and more fun than it has any right to be, thanks primarily to Depp. I'm inclined to ignore the sequels.

A Disney movie based off a theme park ride seemed like an idea destined to sink at the box-office. Instead the film was an epic smash success, spawning a handful of sequels. This return to high quality live-action adventure/comedy marked the first time Disney dared produce/release a movie with a PG-13 rating, and their risk paid-off tremendously. However they have taken the best thing about this movie, "Cpt. Jack Sparrow" and attempted to drain every last cent out of him with each new sequel.

Damn fine entertainment. If I had to gripe about anything, it would be that the big stand-off at the end seems like it could have been cut down by 5-10 minutes. But that's hardly enough to stop me from enjoying such a fun adventure.

You'll always remember this as the kids pirate flick that was *almost* better than Goonies. At a meager 2 1/2 hours you can watch the entire thing while waiting in line for the ride! Thankfully it's well-paced and charismatic, featuring Depp and Rush at their tongue-in-cheekiest. It doesn't do much with a theme (it's okay to break rules when the rules are bad) but like any good campfire ghost tale it draws more strength from the enthusiasm of the telling than the story itself.

One of Disney's finest films, "Pirates" is twice as fun as the ride on which it's based! Johnny Depp was able to add Captain Jack Sparrow into his resume of iconic characters, and the world was reminded why pirates have long served as childhood fun and historical intruige. Romance, action, fantasy and Geoffrey Rush. What more can you wish for?

Johnny Depp really makes the movie worth watching, to be fair Orlando Bloom is alright but Keira Knightley is forgettable. Fact remains, Capt. Jack Sparrow is the reason to see this film.

Johnny Depp really makes this movie. Pretty much anyone could've played Orlando Bloom's part, but I don't think anyone else could've pulled off Jack Sparrow. Depp is both hilarious and entertaining. The story is pure pastiche, of course, but it gets the job done.

An extremely fun movie that was a vessel for Johnny Depp to create an extremely unique and wonderful character (who unfortunately now feels rather played out). Bloom and Depp's chemistry was great and Rush was a cool villain. Just do yourself a favor by watching this movie and then ignoring that there are more movies in the series because all they will do is let you down and make you sick of Jack Sparrow.

"Oh no, X has been kidnapped!" - 10 minute action sequence - "Wait, now they've got Y, we must go back!" - 10 minute action sequence - "But what about Z, we can't just leave him/her!" - 10 minute action sequence. Repeat for two and a half hours. Fair enough, Depp has bags of charisma and some funny one-liners, and Knightley looks good in a wet bodice, but it's all too overblown and bloated for my liking. Everything feels choreographed to the Nth degree and it just ends up getting tiresome.

The perfect blockbuster!! Here are some of the things that make 'The Curse of the Black Pearl' wonderful: A sense of joyful fun for joyful fun's sake. Klaus Badelt's score. Johnny Depp's and Geoffry Rush's delivery (and Keira Knightley's pout). Klaus Badelt's score. Elaborate and brilliantly executed setpieces. Breakneck pacing and the unity of the script. The revitalization of a genre that I thought I disliked. And last, but by no means least, I simply cannot get enough of Klaus Badelt's score.

A very entertaining yarn. On a whole I find it a bit wanting in places but it truly captures the spirit of fun and adventure that I want out of a summer movie. The first movie in this series is a classic. The cast is equally fantastic. Johnny Depp cemented himself as a blockbuster movie star with this movie but he also got himself stuck in a contract with Disney which meant he hasn't really done anything interesting in a while. The story of the Black Pearl is a classic pirate story with all of the quirks. There's pirate treasure, an Aztec curse, and a healthy desire to root for the bad guys.

Depp really is the center of this film, with a performance that's absolutely astounding. But he's far from the only good point in what is one of the greatest adventure movies ever made. Despite its length every moment is gripping and the twists and turns are all perfectly constructed to withstand multiple viewings. The huge budget allows for some excellent visuals as well, nothing is wasted.

This isn't anything deeper than an adventure movie. But it's exactly what an great adventure movie should be. Somewhere in the mixture of Johnny Depp's over-the-top performance, the plot subversions, the massive choreographed action scenes, and Badelt's bombastic score, this found the magic that makes summer movies memorably, fantastically fun.

POTC was a thoroughly enjoyable and refreshing Disney summer blockbuster. But since the series has sadly over complicated itself and ran out of steam. Johnny Depp's over the top but loveable performance as Captain Jack Sparrow has become one of cinema's most loved and loathed characters. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are tolerable in this first instalment but Geoffrey Rush is brilliant. The sense of adventure, exciting set pieces, thumping score and comic relief caters for all the family.

So much fun, so much talent, so need to watch! A delightful blend of comedy, drama, action & romance, all in one great script. It's my (highly unprofessional) opinion that that's probably one of the reasons the films have done so well, they appeal to such a wide audience. Depp - seriously, how does he invent these characters! - is amazing! Rush, again, brilliant in his role! Bloom is so perfectly cast! & all the "minor" characters bring a complete character to screen! Awesome special effects!

A hugely crowd-pleasing swashbuckling epic. It mixes thrills and spectacle and laughs with rare panache, and is anchored by a genuinely brilliant performance by Johnny Depp that has permanently redefined the pop culture pirate. If you don't like it you hate fun, and should go do trigonometry in a dark room or something.

I think the word 'romp' was invented to describe this film. It plays fast and loose with historical accuracy, but who cares when it's so much fun? Jaw-droppingly gorgeous from start to finish, it's pretty much the perfect summer blockbuster. It's hokey and clichéd and probably too long, but it never fails to be entertaining. It owes a lot to LucasArts' Monkey Island games though. Probably the best videogame movie of all time, even if it never acknowledges the game it owes its heritage to.

Depp more than makes up for Orlandull Bloom and Keira Poutley. He steals the show whenever he appears on screen and really deserves all the credit for this film being a massive success. After a pretty average sequel, lets hope that Chow Yun Fat and Depp can make the 3rd film a big hit as well.

A salt-soaked offering of pirate-y adventure movie bravado (lots of cheeky rule breaking, plus a score for the ages) and quirky character comedy (CJS is incredible) with some horror-spiked fantasy thrown in ("You best start believing in ghost stories, Miss Turner-you're in one!"). The rethinking of one's moral compass, meanwhile, is an engaging thematic thread (enigmatic Jack is joined by principled Will and even nose-up Norrington here: "I think we can afford to give him one day's head start").

You won't find too many films that are so obviously made for sheer fun as this one. The cast hams it up with relish, the sets are lavishly stereotypical, the plot pretty standard (though the story a nice departure from the old pirate film stanbys of the 40s & 50s), but none of that really matters. The key here is "harmless" fun, & this film delivers like few have in recent memory.

Director Gore Verbinski takes a playful approach to the pirate genre, mixing in all the usual scallywag elements with a sharp-witted sense of humor and fun. He anchors what could have been a movie with nothing but big effects not on his ships, but on his stars, who carry us through a film that looks to have been every bit as wild to make as it is to watch.
