It's definitely a bit sappy at times, but given what you could do with the material it's actually pretty restrained, which helps make the characters work as people and the big moments hit more genuinely.

I couldn't help but be fully taken by this drama. Field and pretty much everybody else is outstanding in this. And the themes around hypocrisy of institutionalized religion felt greatly developed to me. The only major flaw in this is the silly, uninteresting storyline involving Crouse and Harris.

It;s a shame that most people associate this film with Sally Field's acceptance speech at the Academy Awards. This is a very good film, with great characters and a very good screenplay. Definitely one of the best films from a pretty woeful decade.

Really strong writing, acting, and story about an era that hasn't gotten much attention outside of The Grapes of Wrath.

Field is good (I do like her) and the film doesn't have any glaring flaws other than a plot that doesn't really amount to a very satisfying story.

Answers the question "What if Scarlett O'Hara were written as a likeable character?" The result is a typical old-fashioned film that is probably your grandma's favourite 80's drama. The good guys are good, the bad guys are bad and "they all lived happily ever after" is inevitable. It's still pretty enjoyable but could have used some post-modern bite or edge.

Poignant, beautifully acted drama.

I really liked everything with Glover teaching Sally Field about cotton picking. They both are great. All the side plots are interesting but feel like they could have used significantly more screen time to matter. This is especially true when you consider how stacked the cast is. Oscar-bait but not in an offensive way.
