Christ. Burton takes part in an assault of not only the original film, but every movie lover in the world. This film personally offends me. Takes what was good in the original and pisses on it. The ending is atrocious and makes no sense whatsoever, and easily grabs the spot as the worst ending in history. Wahlberg is infinitely unfit for the leading role. Burton, hang your head in shame and stop making crappy remakes. There's no recovery after this. All my respect for Burton is lost.

No matter how much apeup you slap on Paul Giamatti it'll look exactly like Paul Giamatti. Tim Roth overacts and is god awful in this and walks like he has Cerebral Palsy and it's offensive. Every ape talks with a lisp, the future is hell. Marky Mark rules. In the original Heston was seen as NEAT because he was the only person to know how to talk but int his EVERYONE talks so who cares, lady ape just wanted some Marky Mark in the funky bunches.

I'm sure some of the hate for this movie comes from how different it is from the original, but there's also plenty of reasons to dislike it on its own merits. The story itself could be interesting, but whatever statement it's trying to make is lost in the muddled storytelling and the shallow and 1-dimensional characters. The nonsensical ending doesn't help either.

An utterly unnecessary remake of a true classic. The fact that Burton was at the helm had me anticipating greatness. What I received was agita. Not only does Burton redo the ending; what he gives the audience are one-dimensional characters and a movie devoid of dialogue, which is exactly what drove the original movie. About the only kinds words I can utter for this movie is that the sets and make-up were well done. But that's about all Burton has going for him now.

I didn't think this was anywhere near the train wreck that people claimed it was. Not good, certainly, but not disasterously bad. An adequate but unnecessary reimagining, I thought at first. And THEN I saw the rest of the movie. If the original is somewhat corny "B-movie" concept turned into a masterpiece by its ideas and perfect ending, this is a corny "B-movie" concept turned into a horrendous mess by its lack of thought and terrible, unexplicable final scene.

This Burton remake contrasts the original at every opportunity. Whereas in the original ape society was intriguing and slightly mysterious, here it is meerly transparent. Where once the well spoken Heston stood proud, the self-promoting Wahlberg, blatantly unable to hold a leading role, slouches through the whole performance. Need we mention the plotline, which only becomes recognisable as such by the last ten minutes, the dreary one dimensional characters and the unequivocally idiotic ending.

Worst Tim Burton film to date, apparently due to relentless studio (producer) interference. Ape Lincoln? What the hell is that? Ok in retrospect it's actually hilarious but after watching the film it's pretty insulting to leave you with that ending.

The second of screenwriter Mark Rosenthal's "terrifying ape-rampage" trilogy: Mighty Joe Young (Joe), Planet of the Apes (the entire fucking cast), and Mona Lisa Smile (Julia Roberts). If only he'd taken a page from Rod Serling and written something good, and if only Tim Burton had taken 120 pages from Rosenthal... and burned them.

Adding only action to an old movie does not make it better than the original. Although the makeup and visual effects are of high quality, this movie is lacking in other areas, primarily plot. It's one absurd twist after another, and Mark Wahlberg's performance is quite poor. Total crap!

Simply atrocious. This movie was an awakening for me, and made me realize that Burton wasn't the genius that teenage angsty me thought he was. Fucks up everything that made the original a classic. It woudn't have been so bad if only it had been just bland and unnecessary like most remakes, but this one was offensive and infuriating, and should be considered an act of aggression.

While I wouldn't dare call this film good, I don't hate it as much as many seem to. It's a pointless remake, but I find it strangely enjoyable. Sometimes it's legitimately engaging, as a few of the actors try their best to elevate the material (Tim Roth, primarily). Other times it's like staring at a car wreck, ie. the man/ape semi-romance between Marky-Mark and Mrs. Burton, and some other weird shit (uhh...the ending). The make-up is excellent, the action is good, but it's just so stupid. Damn.

Other than some intriguing set and costume designs, Tim Burton's remake serves zero purpose to exist. Despite the general premise this remake shares nothing in common with the original, instead a meaningless spectacle film devoid of spectacle. However, if you want to see people in monkey prosthetics jumping on wires than this is the film for you since that seems to happen every two seconds.

Mark Wahlberg is no Charleton Heston and just about everything regarding this remake is completely stupid including the extremely mediocre acting. The original Planet of the Apes had a strange surreal charm for its time that can't really be replicated anymore. Entire pieces feel conventional in this and misses the great ironic political and social satire of the original.

This is the poster example of why not to do remakes of movies that have a cult following. What's the point of just duplicating what was done and you're going to alienate the fans of the original property by changing it. Big strikeout by Burton.

Burton's remake of the intelligent, socially conscious sci-fi classic ends up being nothing more than a brainless, generic action movie, with worthless dialogue, characters who are impossible to care about and a profoundly stupid ending. The numerous callbacks to the original are embarrassingly cack-handed. The make-up and music are the only vague positives, but distract little from the awfulness present in all other departments.

There was only one character that was given a real personality, and the action scenes, while serving a purpose in breaking up the otherwise slow pacing, weren't all that great. The ape design looked excellent, but wasn't enough to make you remember it. Yes, the ending that sets up a sequel we will never get allows the film to stick in my memory, and while the rest of the film wasn't great, it wasn't all that bad either. It ends up being a mostly forgettable film that can help pass the time.

The most surprising thing about Planet of the Apes is that Tim Burton allowed his name to be associated with this movie. You can tell this movie was rushed out the door because there is little that captivates the audience in this movie. I like some of the changes they made to the formula. The cast was astounding. Paul Giamatti, Michael Clarke duncan, and Tim Roth were bright spots in the casting. Mark Wahlberg is a blank slate. I know he was hot when this came out but he is terrible in this.

I must say that almost 25 years later the makeup on this movie is still impressive. And I liked Roth and Giamatti's performances. That's it! Everything else here is awful: Burton's direction, the whiplash editing, the boring final fight, the lame surprise ending. Even with an interesting twist (Wahlberg's spaceship being the initial catalyst), the old adage holds true: trying to remake a fantastic movie is folly.

A major science fiction film in it's time tells a story of astronauts crash landing to a planet ruled by apes. Charlton Heston is perfectly cast representing a stubborn human male. Includes several memorable lines and of course the famous end scene. Planet of the Apes is basically a long version Twilight Zone story filled with some philosophy and moral speech. Despide been made by a major Hollowood studio the film is relatively small in scope avoiding big expensive scenes.

The action sequences are boring. The costuming, which positive reviewers seem to focus on, really makes things worse; the very concept of these apes is so outlandish that the realer-looking the costumes, the dumber the whole idea seems to be. This is a movie that was doomed to failure no matter HOW good the acting, costumes, action, and plot, unless the writers and director went completely the other way. Do not see this film unless you, like me, are trying to see everything Paul Giamatti's in.

This remake/reimagining of the 1968 classic starts on the right foot with a captivating introduction that differs from the original's. Also Rick Baker's makeup and prosthetics are very good and Paul Giamatti is terrific. Yet somehow the film falls short. It can't measure up to the original narratively or thematically and therefore emerges as both less captivating and more superficial. But even without making this comparison, it's haphazardly written and only mildly thrilling at best.

Marked the decline of Burton's artistry and his descent into being a studio gun-for-hire peddling pointless remakes and adaptations. Some effort has been put into world building here, but it doesn't really compute because the script is junk and Wahlberg was miscast in the lead role, so we have no rooting interest in the human story. On the plus side, Roth makes for a particularly intense villain, the visuals are decent, if a little anonymous, and the cliffhanger ending is ballsy.
