Bribery, slander, name calling, empty promises.... they picked up on democracy pretty quick.

Engrossing as a social experiment, but more entertaining overall simply because it's a bunch of 8-year-olds being adorably political. There's a scene where the entire classroom bursts into tears somewhat inexplicably and it's such an overload of cuteness that your brain can barely handle it. It's also fascinating to see just how differently elementary education is handled in China (not to say that this is in any way a damning or definitive account).

It's almost frightening how the political games played by these three Chinese third-graders just introduced to democracy and the voting process mirror the way American politics work.

Even if they are young kids lacking any real experience with democracy, they sure learned the tricks of the trade. Nothing seems to be out of the question when it comes to underhanded tactics. I especially liked the big boy, how he handled the class, his ability to communicate, he was just a joy to watch.

Watched on the day of a local state election - it’s kind of brilliant how well this plays as rich satire, with kids who do have a precocious spark but don’t appear to be manipulated in their behaviour – proves all of the standard political maxims (including the one about every career ending in tears), though the lack of a broader insight, or how this might reflect on China’s macro politics, means it’s a “tell us something we don’t know” experiment, rather than anything particularly insightful.

The obvious parallels to our democracy are there, it's interesting (and sometimes hilarious) in that respect, but this documentary could've done a lot more in contextualizing what the vote meant for the kids and what the slow creep of democracy meant for China's future.

A truly fascinating, hilarious and disturbing film about democracy. The three main characters are so well-defined in the film's short 55 minute span. This is a must-see.

I never really liked "documentary films", but this is surprisingly memorable and good. Despite it's brevity, it provides a peek into the growing schooling system in China and the people's relationship with it.
