Pleasure Party (1975)
Phillipe and Esther live an apparently idyllic life with their daughter, Elise. In an attempt to preserve this bliss, Phillipe decides that he and Esther should each have affairs, being sure to tell each other openly about them. The plan backfires with tragic results as Phillipe becomes engulfed in jealously. (imdb)

|
A disturbing and memorable exploration of male egotism and violence, or--as Chabrol himself termed it--the story of a "fascist in love." It builds slowly, and there are no stars here to grab your attention, but stay with it. This is an unsettling movie. The two major roles of man and wife in this semi-autobiographical screenplay are played by screenwriter Gegauff and his ex-wife--which makes things even more unsettling. Chabrol's direction is subtle and nuanced--as always.
