Poet i tsar (1927)
Tsar Nicholas I is enamoured by Natalia, the wife of Alexander Pushkin. To cover his tracks, the tsar encourages the suit of Georges d'Anthès, a French officer, with the help of Count Alexander von Benckendorff. Pushkin hears rumours of D'Anthès's love for his wife and challenges him to a duel. The officer attempts to save his life by marrying Natalia's sister Ekaterina. Returning from his country estate, Pushkin receives anonymous letters and insists on a duel with D'Anthès.

The Poet and the Czar is perhaps a little too complex of a story to follow without proper subtitles, but even with some of the story feeling vague, this does touch on masterful film making at times. No doubt a quality Soviet film about love, betrayal and consequence. The main characters get their personalities across with solid acting. I've only seen some very selected films from directors Chervyakov and Gardin without those movies impressing much, but here together they shoot a good one.
