It's a pretty fun movie. Definitely made to appeal to Pokémon fans. I'm not into Pokémon nor did I grow up loving it, but that's not to say I didn't have a good time. I even got a handful of the references to games and shows. Reynolds is surprisingly charming and the CGI isn't too bad either. I didn't really think the two human leads were all that likable or necessarily good, but meh. I also thought the ending/twist was sweet and genuine. Overall, this was decent.

While far from being the first Pokemon movie, "Detective Pikachu" is the first to bring Pokemon to the realm of blockbusters, shedding a bunch of world building and altering just as much. It's as if the producers thought that a few million man-children from the 90's and all their offspring weren't enough of an audience already. Yet, in spite of the needless world reboot, this movie has its charms, largely coming from Reynolds ability to ad lib his way into the hearts of everyone in the planet.

Literally my first encounter with Pokémon. My son wanted to see it and he was kind enough to go to Big Trouble in Little China with me so I wanted to return the favor. The trailer plays up all of the humor that is in the film, but it feels fairly sparse throughout the entirety of the picture. Some very serious emotional themes make this a somewhat less whimsical experience than perceived. Good world building though and a decent mystery. Now how do I invest full paychecks into this phenomenon?

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu is a misguided, utterly baffling cinematic experience that I feel totally unequipped to describe, let alone critique. So much care has been taken in realising this world and the visually stunning Pokemon who inhabit it, but the characters we're left to follow are stilted and lifeless, as is the incomprehensible mystery they're left to solve. Reynolds' turn as the titular Pokemon may be inspired, but the same can't be said of the sloppy narrative he's been confined to.

A wonderfully gratifying first act lays open a madcap world of Pocket Monsters and humans acting awesomely millennial - a place of Jigglypuff crooners and Ludicolo baristas and probably a full Pokédex of other bright ideas. So what does it do with all this potential? Follow two passive heroes led by a string of cliches, bad dialogue and a logic as sound as those direct-to-video Dragonball Z features, but here with a big studio budget. The biggest reveal in the film is Ryan Reynolds is white.

Oh man, I forgot to write a review for this one. And honestly, I think that's pretty emblematic of the problems with this movie. As a Pokemon fan growing up (and even a little to this day), this film is just kind of poorly executed and trite. There's nothing all that interesting to be found, other than some better than average creature designs. It's cute for kids, but it likely won't affect nostalgic older fans the way they might have hoped for.

If you remove Ryan Reynolds and the undeniable aesthetic he brings to whatever movie he (or his voice) is in, this is a relatively mediocre movie I think. It's simplistic storytelling at its core, helpful for kids but sometimes frustrating for the rest of the audience. Luckily, Reynolds plus an at-times-interesting whodunit are enough to make this an enjoyable watch. Needed 15% more funny, but I can't say I'm let down, per se. CGI was fine for me. Pikachu makes an unexpected Seinfeld reference.

The things that occupies my mind the most are the thoughts of Bill Nighy while working on this movie. "Poukaymon. Do I pronounce it right? What's a Bulbasaur? The fuck is this duck?"

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Everything just worked. The humour was on point, the CGI was great, the story was interesting enough, Reynolds was good as Pikachu. Had some heart, some fun action, a good premise. It does this thing that a lot of comedies do where it mostly abandons humour for the final battle (and admittedly the film is weakest here), but that doesn't undo the fun mystery, emotion and comedy that preceded it. And it's not like the battle was TERRIBLE.

Honestly thought this was going to be really bad but it went above my expectations and I had a lot of fun with this. It's a light entertaining ride, that manages to not be completely dumbed down and stupid which could've been easy considering what this is based on. Sometimes the voice acting by Ryan Reynolds reminds me of Master Shake from Aqua Teen Hungerforce which is an automatic plus.

I grew up with Pokemon so I was obviously quite stoked for this. Nicely creative and the CGI versions of the Pokemon actually go down well. Plot wise, it's all quite basic but Ryan Reynolds elevates it to a fairly decent outing. It's really odd to see Bill Nighy chat about Pokemon...

The film was far from perfect but there was some good points in it. Inception scene was well build, Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu was more close to R rated Deadpool than a character for kids. Storywise I did not like film, even it was more closer to superhero movie than anime (with silly Pokemon characters).

A very cute and fun time at the movies that falls down when it tries to get more dramatic as expected. Still, I had an awesome time. Seeing how the Pokemon were integrated into the world was great, and while most of the story turns were massively obvious there were a couple of smaller twists I thought were legitimately good. Plus you get to hear Bill Nighy say ‘Pikachu’ AND ‘Mewtwo’!

I had a fun time, because I have a special place in my heart that always wanted a pikachu. The story is bad though. You can hardly call this a detective story, since all clues are practically thrown at the main character. There's nothing wrong with the world this story takes place in, but it felt as though they didn't use it to its full potential. Definitely a childrens movie

As a 1st gen Pokémon fan, I can't deny that I found some pleasure in this live action adaptation. That said, objectively, Detective Pikachu isn’t a good movie. The plot is both predictable and a bit inconsistent with the ending feeling rushed. Reynolds' performance feels like a PG Deadpool, which is amusing at times, but not novel. The most memorable moments were the ones in the trailer.

my aunt texted me when this was coming out that I must be excited for it. I'm not 8 anymore, so I wasn't, but it was fairly charming and does well to utilize its potential of "what if the Orc Cop movie, but Pokemon?" there is definitely an 8 year old out there who has this as their favorite movie, now, and it's nice they get something that's moderately charming and innovative, if not special, because there are far worse alternatives out there. I got Kangaroo Jack.

While I'm not a huge Pokemon fan, I think this film does pretty well in paying a lot of fan service and just playing "spot the Pokemon" is quite fun in itself. The story might be a little too mature for kids (also very meh and troupe-y), but there are enough laughs and cuteness around to keep them entertained. Having said that, it's all about Ryan Reynolds' charming, fast-mouthed, sassy voice-character work that works so well here and makes the film.

This does an admirable job of building on the Pokemon brand to create an accessible setting most people can enjoy. You don't have to love Pokemon to watch it, and you won't feel slighted as a hardcore fan either. The script is often on the verge of comatose, usually relying on Reynolds alone to keep the energy up, but he's up to the task, his off-the-cuff style working well here, and surprisingly distinct from his Deadpool personality. And I want to squish that Pikachu to death.

The videogame adaptation curse persists. Slightly more charming, illegitimate lovechild of the Mario movie and Theodore Rex is about as much of a mess as you'd expect of that combination. The major "problem" with this movie is that it is a plain kids movie, and doesnt even attempt to be an all-ages classic like a Pixar is generally credited for. The execution as it is is very solid, the pokemon are adorable, but the plot is obvious and honestly a discount Zootopia. with a pokemon movie by the GOOSEBUMPS director that references burton's BATMAN, HOME ALONE and SEINFELD, has the nostalgia porn-era reached crisis point yet? although tbf this is less the expected gimmicky fan-service than a rare blockbuster that's TOO economical, prioritising a rote story over the world that is its sole calling card. the closest comparison is probably ZOOTOPIA, but with a lot less on its mind and a reveal so inexplicable we were in stitches during the most 'poignant' scene.

This isn't a good movie at all, it's full of awkward exposition and cliched plot beats. HOWEVER I am a totally uncritical fan of this franchise so I'm going to give it a good score anyway. The jokes mostly land (even though most of them were in the trailer) and Pikachu himself is an incredible creation that totally avoids the uncanny valley weirdness that some of the other designs fall into. While I've never actually played a pokemon game they are unavoidable in gaming culture, so even I was excited and impressed to see Squirtle, Bulbasaur and of course Pikachu on screen, and I imagine these feelings are magnified for true fans of the franchise. It has a decent narrative structure and likable if somewhat cookie -cutter characters. But, WOW, is the tone inconsistent! Most of the movie gets surprisingly dark early on, and for parts of the film Ryan Reynolds feels more like comic relief. Expect emotional whiplash from this one. Still, it's a fair movie that at least fans of Pokemon will likely enjoy.

Though far from the massive flop many feared it could be, it doesn't live up to its own hype & is still just good, never great. Anchored by Reynolds' enjoyable (though obnoxiously samey) performance as Pikachu & plenty of Pokemon appearances and references, where it flops is in its story. Newton & Smith are enjoyable, but their characters are paper thin & their relationship rings hollow- as does the main plot of the movie, hampered by boring tropes & weak writing. I undeniably enjoyed it, though I admit that may be largely because I have an eternal soft spot for Pokémon due to the roughly year-and-a-half stretch in ‘98-‘00 when I lived and breathed the Pokémon Game Boy game, card game and anime - playing the card game at school, watching the anime and playing the video game after school, reading fanfic, all that jazz. Two things going for this movie - Ryan Reynolds is fantastic in this voice role, and they do a *reasonable* job at bringing Pokemon to life in a realistic setting. That said, it has a lot of shortcomings - aside from Reynolds, nobody in this can act and the chemistry is abysmal, even with pokemon nostalgia it'd be a bottom-tier movie without Reynolds. Bringing Pokemon to life is also a 6/10 effort - there are good references, but the world doesn't feel truly immersive.

Even having not played Pokemon as a kid, this was a fun movie. I saw the problems with the film, especially the weak story and human characters, but I didn't really care because of the world this movie created.

Movie had more dark undertones than I expected. To be honest it reminded me of Trainspotting. I only watched Trainspotting once as a kid but it left me remembering it for years. I doubt I will remember Detective Pikachu for so long but still that was pretty cool exploration of dark human nature. Only thing I was disappointed in is happy ending. It should end on more bitter sweet notes in my opinion but I guess studio executives has not allowed it.
