By the time Pikachu starts getting repeatedly slapped by his own clone, the movie becomes an out-of-body experience, where the surreal images and seizure-inducing music combine to transport you to another realm of existence. This singular event allows for total comprehension of the entirety of existence, and offers us the chance to touch the finger of God.

Ash, I see now that I was wrong. You have taught me that slavery isn't wrong, as long as the slaves have Stockholm Syndrome. There's exploitation, like what the evil scientists did to me, and then there's the nice happy exploitation, as you do to your Pikachu. I, Mewtwo, have learned a valuable lesson, and I thank you.

This movie is atrocious. In typical Pokemon-anime-series fashion, it is a gargantuan marketing engine which masquerades as a deep story of friendship and love. Which means, "Kids, go buy more Pokemon friend from your friends at Hasbro!" Anyone over the age of twelve will want to Thundershock themselves into a coma by the end of this.

Granted, I haven't seen this recently so I'm guessing on the score here, assuming the nostalgia does not hold up. The games were pretty fun, the movie never really added anything at all.

Poor even for a kids movie and ultimately fails to fulfill its potential. Didn't think was too bad when I was nine, but now it is just an embarrassment. Still, it is one of those films you like to watch just to see how laughably bad it is in parts.

Actually when this first came out the main reason i saw it in theatre was to get the free pokemon card. It's kinda hilarious, I remember the big pokemon battle at the end was in slow motion with a Blessid Union of Souls song playing. What band could possible be less intense for a fight scene? I am a Pokemon fan though, I can't help it, Mewtwo rulz.

I would lie if I'd say that I didn't like it when I was living the Pokemon boom. But I have to say I still remember to prefer even the TV-Series, and anyway, what I really really loved was the game, and this movie was probably the last thing I watched about Pokemon. So my big nostalgia is with that small blue gameboy cart and not all those series or movies.

At the time it was special, now undermined by the fact it is simply the first in a long line which is now milking the proverbial Miltank until it's udders are red raw. Still it didn't disappoint at the time though Ash turning to stone was a little over sentimental. I guess that it holds up now because it was before the days of merchandise-baiting

The moral is confused (tho more in the dub than the original, of course) and there are plot holes all over the place. But there's also some genuine moral ambiguity here, and a few emotional moments that are backed by honest power. Kids in the late '90s could've done much worse.

Okay, obviously a move of pokemon isn't going to be great but COME ON. I mean, I remember this film feeling just slightly more epic when I saw it as a wee child; it all takes place in the same bloody room. It's trite and twee in its overall message of "don't punch other people even if they punch you". Also the voice-acting, at least in the American dub, is pretty painful.

It probably was bad. I don't remember. But I liked it very much at the time. I still remember making the quickest preparation in my life to go to the cinema, the silly short before the movie, and the fact my grandmother slept through all of it. Six yo me would rate 10/10. Irrational nostalgia-filled vote.

Nostalgia is cruel. It had the animation quality and potential to rise above its origins, but the plot is both lacking and shoots itself in the foot by showing the hypocrisy of a franchise about capturing and pitting wild animals against each other. Since the music was changed as well as language track, I have to critique them and they are horrifically painful to hear at times, showing the worst kind of tampering with a non-English property. If I was less kind I would have damned this.

I love Pokemon, but its anime is the worst I've ever seen. All the characters suck except for Brock. As for the movie itself, there's some good songs (I'm a sucker for 90s pop) and Mewtwo's island has some pretty cool backdrops. Uh... does anyone really need to review this?

Opinion on this film is going to be based on whether or not you're a fan of the series. If you are (which I am) it is a very entertaining and very emotional trip into the established universe. Any others really need not apply to this one. It's only for the fans.

actually a fairly cool mash-up of alien, ghost in the shell, star wars, dbz etc until that greenpeace cunt mew turns up and ruins everything. "this proves fighting is wrong, it's useless, what can come out of it?!" misty cries, forgetting her complicity in a world that forces cute creature slaves to beat the shit out of each other for their masters' entertainment and oneupmanship. the english dub gets an even lower rating for drowning the climax in an extra dollop of disingenuous anti-war syrup.

Incomprehensible mish-mash of sound and fury is clearly not designed to win any new fans – if you are already familiar with the Pocket Monsters, you will undoubtedly get more out of this, though the self-serious anti-war climax (with a boy band crooning about love and peace as we see the pokies beating the crap out of each other) would be a difficult one to stomach even with greater sympathy for the overall enterprise. Pretty clearly not for me, but others proceed at their own risk!
