There is a plot that's followable but the moral of story isn't really there. None of the bad guys (including Depardieu) really suffer for it. There's something fun in watching French police go through tropey hardnosed tactics and running around in leather jackets. The women are all pleasant to look at and objects of desire for an age-inappropriate Depardieu. Fav scene: scenes don't really stand out in this, so the most memorable was the gangsters laughing about bail in America.

A young, chiseled Dépardieu and an even younger peachy-cheeked Marceau get sultry and steamy without taking their clothes off in a policier more about sex than crime. The main plot and characters end up not mattering all that much, they are just scenery to be torn into. The film looks intensely at the lives of working women as bosses, colleagues, entertainers and confidantes, and how differently men treat them in various situations. Classic Breillat. Worth it for the young French talent on show

Viewed August 5, 2021. Watching this I was struck by how carefully Pialat brings together these opposing forces, how Depardieu seems so cold at the beginning of the film and so vividly emotional by its end.

Too degenerate and crude. It would have helped if Depardieu's character was likeable, or anyone in it. Also, points off for the ending.

Tries to say something about the universality of the human condition or something by featuring the cops and the criminals partying together after hours, but this is still an astonishingly dull film, considering. Pialat, Depardieu, and Bonnaire all went on to do _Under Satan's Sun_, an excellent example of how "art" films can be much more exciting than "entertainment"

A film I have trouble reviewing, because it does not have any hallmark or superior element I can hang my hat on and point to. A film that's well-made, but not well-made toward any aim I can easily decipher. I'm sure if you squint hard enough, there's more to be found.

Gritty police drama cum romance penned by Catherine Breillat, while certainly bearing Pialat's fingerprints. Relies heavily on the force of good dialogue, more so than the familiar territory of the plot. Not a favorite, but still a very, very good movie.
