Pool of London

This mixes some classic genres; romance, heist and suspense, very well, while also giving a sharp character-study, combining it with a realistic ambiance by setting it in the London harbor district. Bonus points for dealing so well with racial prejudices in a 50s British movie.

Quando fiz um binge de Basil Dearden não assisti esse filme por não estar na rede na época, sanei isso hoje e fiquei muito feliz, pois traz questões raciais totalmente inéditas no cinema britânico da época. Aliás, o Dearden sempre trouxe questões sociais muito relevantes no seu cinema, seja a questão racial em seu Sapphire e All Night Long ou de orientação sexual em Victim. Basil Dearden deftly blends kitchen sink realism with a crime drama. It's one of the first British films to depict an interracial couple.

This is fine, a workmanlike noirish crime drama, but it kind of bored me. Maybe it just caught me in the wrong mood.

Rugged British crime film. Got a lot of ideas, and quite a few of them comes effectively into fruition. First acting gig for Earl Cameron, teaming with not-so-big-name Bonar Colleano. They were probable too fresh to carry this above their weight-class. Not that there weren't times they really did capture the hard-knock mood Basil Dearden was going for. But overall, this was a little rough around the edges to fully pull me in, but there was a lot I did like as well.
