Another one of those 'doofus who has it all and then doesn't has to find the true value of [Good Thing]' comedies that's part schadenfreude and part cameo-fest. Sure, there's some decent jokes and amusing(ly shitty) songs in that Lonely Island style I enjoy, but it's such well-trod ground that it kinda becomes a ...wait, this metaphor won't work as I see only one set of footprints in the sand here. I guess the spirit of Spinal Tap was carrying them the whole time.

A mockumentary chronicling the meltdown of a fictional Bieber-esque superstar, POPSTAR is a brilliant spoof of manufactured showbiz success. The film's secret is its lack of cynicism: rather than simply poke fun at the hubris and excess of the famous--though there is plenty of that--POPSTAR captures the contradictions in modern celebrity culture (where the famous must simultaneously appeal godlike and "real") while never compromising its silly, giddy comic spirit.

Me coming back to my old review and essentially realising I called it funny but forgettable when it’s actually legitimately great and I’ve seen it several times by now and remember it very well. Soundtrack is the second best Lonely Island album. Tim Meadows is a comedic genius. I’ve got a movie for you to watch....but you are gonna like it

I can't help it: I wanted this to be funnier. I laughed but, I wanted to laugh more. Satire doesn't have to be funny ALL the time, if it's also biting and relevant, but this feels like it's supposed to be laugh-dependant, and I just didn't laugh ENOUGH to REALLY like it. Maybe it needed more insulation? A funnier side cast? I don't know. But I like the Lonely Island guys, and if you like them, you'll probably like this movie well enough. Though that's admittedly a rather narrow path to cross.

A crude, by-the-numbers mockumentary that tries harder than the Little Engine that Could to make you laugh once more at things you already laughed at in 2010 watching all those Lonely Island videos at work. These guys' obsession with sex reminds me a lot of mine when I was twelve. I would have loved this movie if I was twelve.

As much as this is a parody of today's Pop Music/Celebrities, the songs are so awesomely dumb, they could actually be on the charts and no one would be the wiser. I actually liked this docu-spoof more than "This Is Spinal Tap" for those very concerning reasons, as the lines are becoming more and more blurred when it comes to good/bad pop music. The TMZ gags were so absurdly accurate and over the top, I found myself still laughing during the next scenes. Just too perfect. I'm not gay!

In a similar vein to "This is Spinal Tap" (music mockumentary), but lacks the "weight" of that film. Still, it's the type of comedy I love -- a film that doesn't become bogged down with plot -- and lets the jokes just keep a-comin'.

I'll admit this didn't connect with me the first time I watched it but on subsequent viewings I've found the funny side of it. Samberg is perfect as Connor4Real (actual name Connor Friel is a subtle gag in itself) the self absorbed mostly talentless egotistical 'Popstar' of the title. While the narrative is a predictable and cliched 'rise/fall/redemption' arc the satire of the pop world and general funny gags keep the laughs coming throughout.

You know, for being such a niche subgenre the 'musical mockumentary' has a relatively high bar (Spinal Tap, CB4, Walk Hard) and Popstar isn't that far down. Its big weakness is being all short-burst humor, there's no "this goes to eleven" type of material that will stick with everyone forever - but I guess that's how pop culture is now, digested and discarded quickly. What was the message of this movie anyway, that Marky Mark needs to get back with the Funky Bunch? Not something I'm against.

At least there's some people in comedy not afraid of having a comedy where JOKES are the main thing they focus on. Weird how action comedy or dramedy has completely just dwarfed the want to tell jokes.

There's lots of good comedy here-from the celebrity satire and cameo-littered mockumentary framework to the outlandish songs and dim-witted lead-but it does start to wear thin even within the short run-time, and the predictable plot (props for the spoof of the "choosing what really matters" moment with the stage manager though) doesn't do much to fill in the gaps. Still, a serviceable comedy that gets laughs, even if it's just from pure ridiculousness (see the wolf attack/marriage proposal).

As a fan of Samberg i was sure to like this and i did. The lonely island songs are what you expect, i laughed. I like the occasional The Lonely Island song/ sketch. I enjoy Samberg on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. I did not enjoy this movie. There are undoubtably a few laughs, but any attempt at satire is lost in completely embracing the TMZ culture. The whole film feels like watching YouTube, but somehow less entertaining. The constant barrage of celebrity cameos is quickly tiresome, and gives the film a Sandler quality.

Weak and uninspired mockumentary which bears much too close a resemblance to the world of reality TV trashy entertainment programmes it is trying to lampoon - an instant turn-off. The characters don't have any redeeming features and the huge set piece jokes are too fake to deliver any cringe value or awkward humour. Aside from the gloss and the star power, this effort fails on most every level. You'd have to be under 23 to tolerate this.

I did enjoy this one, it was fun and entertaining. But it's a very local movie, too American culture centered for foreign audiances and also very modern. It probably won't hold too much ground a decade from now since it's so about today. So although it's fun, I don't think it would be classic but it is a good satiric representation of this generation.

Now that's a dope satire of pop music. While the lyrics and clips do the job of making artists even more cartoonish and childish, the mockumentary style delivers a solid and hilarious way to depict every move as a fake gesture, as it happens every time we see a real life popstar in front of a camera -- the Poppies, the One Direction-ish + Beastie Boys-esque style, the nicely placed cameos (Seal and Bolton, especially) and those CMZ crazy dudes.

This film is so perfect for my generation. Admittedly, I found a lot of it hilarious. The amount of satire this features is insane, as I've never seen one film rip on so many things today. Yes it's so stupid, and it can maybe even be offensive, but Samberg knows how to play to his strengths, and does it pretty well. It can become a little repetitive, as it does hit you over the head with a lot of the jokes. Overall, I'd say this is a pretty good mockumentry.

RottenTomatoes described this as "side-splitting", saying it was the 21st Century's "This is Spinal Tap". Really critics? I giggled a few times but overall it felt like an Adam Sandler comedy. I haven't liked an Adam Sandler film since I was a kid, decades ago. It seemed front-loaded, by the end of the film it got into that sappy reconciliation plot line and everything fell flat. There's a penis in it though, if that's your thing or in case you were wondering. If anything, stream it.

It's solid for what it wanted to be. The Lonely Island never wanted to break barriers with this movie, but you can tell it came from a genuine place of love and affection for music and the stories behind the scenes of famous pop and rock musicians. A full panel of great celebrity cameos bolsters some uneven comedy to make this an overall fun, though not too challenging watch.

The first half of Popstar consist of really funny rapid fire gags and cameos, which makes for a great comedy mockumentary film. The second half opts to lean in to its story and drama a bit, which isn’t very interesting, and leaves it with less laughs. Still, while it isn’t groundbreaking, it’s a lot of fun for what it is, and I look forward to more films from The Lonely Island In the future.

there are some really good bits in here, but it does this weird thing where it's a mockumentary until it decides to stop being one. I have no idea why movies and shows don't just borrow from 30 Rock and The Simpsons, and just embrace cutaways or short bits instead of adopting a mockumentary format for those jokes, only to dump the style for a traditional narrative when convenient.

It's funny and there are some interesting swerves when it comes to the plot and the jokes, but it isn't as funny as is required to be a truly great comedy. This is their Youtube brought to life and demonstrates all the pros and cons of The Lonely Island: some fantastic gags, a bunch of poor ones that don't use absurdism well, and some ripping on typical conventions, where it goes down a path that isn't quite expected. "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" is a welcome new entry in the music mockumentary genre, a goofy satire on the modern pop music industry that features a long cameo list, functioning humour and some pretty hilarious songs. It does what it says on the tin, and does it well - nothing more, nothing less. The Lonely Island's brand of comedy is herein represented pretty well through both the script and the music but, coupled with a fairly predictable plot, remains arguably limited.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping didn't look like something that would be worthwhile, but it turns out that it is. A very funny look into the life of a celebrity, the film satirizes that culture with brutal efficiency, and actually generates sympathy for its initially vapid-seeming lead. The music is good, the jokes are constant, there are a ton of celebrity cameos that actually fit in with the theme of the movie, and the mockumentary style more or less helps us ignore that this plot is tired.

A capable satire of modern celebrity culture, even as it plays into those cults of personality with endless celebrity cameos. The comedy is loose with only occasionally novel gags, and the best songs pick up a lot of the slack, but much of the humor is derived from the same surprise cameo schtick, which is less funny and more amusing. The moral of staying true to yourself and not forgetting where you come from is as conventional as it gets, but it's surprisingly earnest and smoothly integrated.

Admittedly slight and lacking in the verisimilitude which made SPINAL TAP so effective, it still provides quite a few laughs, from the goofy songs ("Equal Rights" is the best of the lot) to the amiably wacky cast, special mention going to Chris Redd as the devious Hunter the Hungry.

There's a million jokes in here, and a lot of them are inspired and hilarious. Samberg is undoubtedly terrific - perhaps owing to his time on Brooklyn 99, he manages to find a bit of heart in Conner4real, without ever sacrificing his douchebag exterior. He's complicated, like you'd expect an actual egomaniac popstar to be. Unfortunately, it doesn't always hang well together as an actual movie - it's too frenzied, unable to fit a silly sense of humor AND a real story into a mockumentary frame.

The relatively funny skit comedy troupe Lonely Island play upon and significantly improve upon their music related humour, packing more jokes and crafty pop culture jabs than before, all the while tying their music skits to a suitable storyline -- it may not be totally original satire, yet it's still a refreshing presence since pop culture itself often needs to present its own parodies (given the immense resources on show in this film), making such a thing a rarity.

Beyond that, it does feel disjointed and inconsistent, but the writing largely glosses over its imperfections. If you're into The Lonely Island's other music, then this is worth a watch.

A hilarious movie that doesn't have a second of fat on it. It's the Lonely Island film fans deserve.
