While it's a great, gorgeous and cutesy film on the surface, once I realized the story was about survivor's guilt everything clicked into place even more beautifully and tragically. Porco's flaws (womanising, gluttony, being stubborn and prideful) ironically make him more human than most animated human characters from other studios.

This one gets better and better the more I think about it. Obviously the animation is phenomenal, like almost all of Ghibli's projects, but it's the characters that make this so irresistibly entertaining. Porco is a stubborn yet charming protagonist, and Fio is just so cute. The dream sequence toward the end of the movie gives me goosebumps every time. It's just so damn gorgeous and mesmerizing. It feels weird watching a Miyazaki movie that isn't two hours long. Excellent.

An unusual animation with surprisingly expansive psychological meaning carefully entwined within an outwardly simplistic adventure plotline. It's brilliantly designed from both an artistic and written perspective with a great feeling of liberation and incredible attention to detail, many of the best techniques used within Miyazaki's other work are also shown here prominently. The uplifting, intelligent and extremely eccentric Porco Rosso has quickly become something of a personal favourite.

Wildly romantic, with a deep sense of The World That Was and The World that Should Be, a truly heroic adventure with exotic locales and great characters -- and even the Bad Guys are Not Too Bad. A fusion of WINGS and CASABLANCA and the kind of classic animation that really makes full use of the medium's potential. Miyazaki's best . . . moviegoers sopped on Disney and Pixar should take this as a remedy, just to know how good, how entertaining and how refreshing animated films can be.

Leave it to Miyazaki to make a story about a pig one of the most romantic and longing films I've seen. That's because it's not even remotely about a longing for A Girl, or an idealized place out of time yet fated to end, but about a longing for connection. It embraces bonds and camaraderie above all else, subtly peeling away the masks we think will protect us from hurt and shame. A character eventually whispers, "Wow. The world is so beautiful." And for a moment, yeah, we believe it.

Perhaps Miyazaki's finest work to date, this is more of a grown up's story as opposed to the likes of Spirited Away and Totoro. Still it maintains the same witty sense of humor especially in its caricature of an american pilot hoping to become a film star.

I want to live inside Hayao Miyazaki's head. The guy creates such wonderful, bizarre, intriguing fictional worlds. There's no way the audience is supposed to be able to take this strange story seriously, yet here I am, thinking about it quite seriously indeed. This story is actually very clever, and the ending is nothing short of ingenious.

The Miyazaki film for those that feel kind of intimidated by Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. It's simple (save for a few different parts), but very very charming and funny. Having a pig out of the blue for a main character is pretty odd with everyone else being normal (aside from some cartoonish faces), but the backstory behind it is surprisingly moving. I'd say this is probably Miyazaki's most underrated film, and one that shouldn't be overlooked.

Prior to The Wind RIses, Porco Rosso is perhaps the Miyazaki film that is most rooted in historical reality (despite the fact that the main character is an anthropomorphic pig) with its post-WW1 backdrop. Strip away the low-key approach and lighthearted tone and you will find an aching center. It's as much a celebration of the beauty and wonder of flight as it is a yearning for freedom and respite from one's disillusionment with humanity and its destructiveness.

Fantastically written, lovingly put together & just charming as hell. The narrative is a bit loose but I really enjoyed the smaller scope, slower pace & open conclusion. It's all about character & tone. In a very engaging way, it gives you what you bring to it. Rather than a tiresome lesson, it comes off as a bunch of quietly contemplative questions presented with heartfelt care. Also it has a warm sense of humour that's brilliantly integrated to the story & visuals. One of Miyazaki's best.

Imagine Humphrey Bogart as a humanoid pig... it's a combination of romantic drama, humor and dying past. Makes you thing of Casablanca, but has much more to offer - all the details which may seem random or insignificant actually add to the meaning and there are layers to this film. My personal Miyazaki favourite.

Who could believe that seaplanes above one sea could be interesting animation. Hayao Miyazaki's clouds and sea views are beautiful to watch. He's also puting his esteem on small details, making animation very alive and pleasant to see. The story was not that successful.

Not Miyasaki's greatest, but not too far off. As you would expect the animation is beautiful, exciting and full of personality. There are some great characters too, and the 1930's setting is just perfect. It may lack the depth of some of Miyazaki's very finest work, but certainly makes up for that with bags of charm.

It feels like a goofy adventure about a cursed aviator, but Porco Rosso is mostly Miyazaki's homage to old Hollywood and European melodramas set in harsh times -- here, circa 1930, between two wars, in which pirates, smugglers and other kinds of outlaw men found their own way to make a living. This lonely, self-employed and seductive Italian-like pilot isn't exactly a lovable hero -- the hints of sexuality are incredibly provocative --, but exhales irony and romance. Wicked, bright comedy.

Wonderful - perhaps it's the freewheeling sense of adventure to the whole thing, or the romantic flourishes, or more simply that it is one of his funnest and funniest films. The ending is open, though a sly wink or two at the audience would hint otherwise and so our hearts can only imagine the most beautiful and swooningly romantic possibilities. Firo's challenging of Porco's occasionally piggish (pun...) views about women is perfectly on the money yet never too forcefully handled.

This is yet another quality Miyazaki movie. Yet I feel, that Miyazaki truly shines when he is given a full fantasy world to work with rather than just one or two aspects. That is why I feel that films like Porco Rosso and his newer movies will never reach the level at as Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle. Just my opinion though.

One of the Ghibli films which seems to have all the colour, style and eccentricity it could need, but ends up feeling a bit middle-of-the-pack. The main character looks memorable but doesn't really endear himself to the viewer with his attitude. The setting has romantic potential but the plot barely has any. And the life-or-death nature of aerial dogfighting seems at odds with the indestructible cartoon characters. It looks dreamy but it's tonally all over the place - a weaker Ghibli in my list.

Like it, but don't love it. Of course it's beautiful to look at, especially the numerous flying scenes and Porco's hideout. But the film feels like it doesn't know what it wants to be--a serious tale for adults, or a kid-friendly movie about flying. Thus, we have to rely on Porco telling us he's the hard-drinking, womanizing type, for the film simply won't go there. That Miyazaki manages to make this as clever as it is given these constraints shows the level of talent on display here.

One of Miyazaki's oddest works, based on the idiosyncratic premise that seaplanes were once a dominant factor in transportation. His hero this time is an ace pilot who has mutated into a pig. And so it goes. PORCO ROSSO is unusually plot-driven for Miyazaki, and it lacks the transcendent beauty of his best work (one haunting limbo sequence aside), but it's a good deal of fun, with enjoyable characters, a richly realized fantastical world, and of course, gorgeous animation.

It blends the exhilarating with heartfelt emotion and sharp levity when the moment is right. Sure, there is some cheese (specifically the beach side ambush) but it doesn't really detract...the protagonist is a humanoid pig after all. The only parts that didn't fit were whenever Porco or other pilots spouted out exposition to explain something that was pretty obvious by simply watching. Still, a great time.

At first, I didn't expect that Porco Rosso would make me feel the way Miyazaki's films make me feel to be honest. I was quite wrong. Porco achieved to make me like him from the very beginning - maybe because he is chain-smoking and found that similarity to myself. The soundtrack is magnificent and the sceneries around the Adriatic sea along with Porco's trips in beautiful sunsets or stormy skies guarantee you'll enjoy your "flight".

This film creates a nice 30s adventure mood, together with the wistful romantic connection between Marco and Gina. The movie Miyazaki regrets is still undeniably gorgeous and filled with so many iconic scenes and interesting characters, however it does suffer with some odd love stories and missing backstory. It could've used an extra half hour to truly make it into an adult story, but as is it accomplishes the goal of some amazing aerial animation and having some darker tones in an otherwise picturesque landscape.

One of the things I love about Miyazaki's work is that he does an amazing job at world building, and none of these worlds resemble each other. This film is set in the 1930's on the Mediterranean, which is dominated by sea planes and a flying mercenary fights sky pirates ... and that mercenary is a humanoid pig. That he sells this premise so successfully without spending any time on explicit exegesis. This is a beautiful film.
