Some bright spots here and there, particularly Sammy Davis Jr. in a small but pivotal role, but overall the many production issues overwhelm it. The choice of long wide shots on stage sets is probably the biggest problem, putting the content at odds with the visuals and sapping the humanity that would come from closeups. The song dubbing doesn't help either, and the whole thing just isn't very engaging. The content itself would require a longer form to analyze, interesting but flawed.

Never quite comes to life. Opera--even a jazzy American opera--is very hard to bring to the screen. Plus, Preminger's direction is rather slack . . . did he think perhaps that his good liberal intentions were eough?
