War movies sure have come a long way since this. Everything about this is lackluster. The actors have no energy or urgency. Same with the action and plot. Soldiers walk around the hill like there is no danger. They sit around without cover as if they aren't under fire. They deliver lines like it's kind of just whatever. There is no sense of where anyone is in relation to others. The violence is sanitized, and what's left is a sleepy war adventure without drama or tension.

So-so war film, with some action sequences which are capably rendered, but whose main raison d'etre is its political agenda, with a clear anti-war message being repeatedly forced down the Lieutenant's throat by his countrymen who don't want to fight, would rather not be there, or the folks back home who have grown tired of supporting the war effort. The script doesn't really do its cast many favours, most roles are forgettable; one interesting twist was the Korean radio announcer part.

I wish the people who gave me a psi of 77 had written mini reviews so i could try to see what Im missing. The movie i saw was nonstop battle scenes shot with no sense of scale and little tension or excitement and zero characterization for anyone but Gregory peck.

Proficient if unremarkable war film is now more of a curio for its cast studded with future stars; little effort is made to differentiate the large collection of characters, which occasionally makes the film feel somewhat cluttered and confusing, though Peck's reliably authoritave performance does much to keep the film together. Wall-to-wall war scenes are well staged, but have a curiously pinched, confined feeling to them, which occasionally works against the overall credibility of the film.
