Fletcher's doing five years for breaking and entering. He's quick witted and never short of a trick or two to make his life that little bit easier. Lennie Godber's his cellmate who Fletch often teases but also protects in a father-like way. The other two main characters are prison officers; MacKay's a militarily strict type, keen to adhere to the rules, while Mr Barrowclough is almost a complete opposite and easily manipulated by Fletcher. One of the few successful film spin-off attempts from 1970's comedies. The plot isn't anything to write home about but the band of character actors are so familiar with their roles and work so well together it covers the flaws. Shows Ronnie Barker (now considered passé by many) to be a great comedy character actor. Has an almost documentary feel at times. Well worth a watch on a quiet weekend.

Decent enough, but it falls a bit short when compared to the TV series. There just aren't enough laughs and the story takes too long to get going. The two newly introduced characters (one guard, one con) seem fairly pointless and just become spare parts once the football match strand is introduced. Seems to me that you could have compressed the whole thing into a regular 30 minute episode and not missed much.

The TV series remains of the finest British sitcoms of the 1970's. This feature length version is okay, but never gets anywhere close to the entertainment value of the series. It was however filmed at the prison in my home town of Chelmsford, so a few bonus marks thrown in there!

Decent film version of the legendary TV show.
