The sweet but naive denizens of a charming port town are hoodwinked by a couple of con men who prey on them at the outset of the war. But the hustlers' plan backfires when they come down with severe cases of conscience. Kinoshita's directorial debut is a breezy, warmhearted, and often very funny crowd-pleaser that's a testament to the filmmaker's faith in people. (imdb)

A cozy little film about a group of kind and giving people bringing out the best in others.

Port of Flowers estreava há 80 anos no Japão. É uma boa estreia, mas nada muito memorável, ser propaganda do Eixo também não ajuda muito. archive.org

After watching Akira Kurosawa's debut film, it's time for Keisuke Kinoshita's debut, also from 1943. I guess it was a time for change in Japan. And even Kinoshita impress with his debut. A little more traditional than Kurosawa's approach, but that suited the semi-comical story of two con men trying to swindle people on a small island with their boat building business. The transformation of the duo along with the confidence of those they try to trick, make for a fun story of reform. Charming.
