In this Japanese historical drama, a hard-headed painter refuses to allow his daughter to be with his Korean protege and ends up throwing the lad from his house. The girl then escapes to the court of the local ruler who informs the painter that she will only be released if he will paint a mural. He does, but it is a hellish painting. He and the ruler continue to butt heads until both end up committing suicide. (rottentomatoes)

I found it to be too stage play like to truly be entertaining as a film. The acting was good but everything else was over done and just screamed theatre. I like plays it's just that they don't translate to the sceen too well sometimes, as film and theatre are separate medias and use different methods to tell the same story.

If you want to peer into Japanese cinema beyond the obvious canon of Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, and Ozu, you could do worse than this for a point of entry. Toyoda, along with Naruse, are a bit overlooked under the big three. But this has some vivid and colorful Toho-Scope production values, a script from one of the "Rashomon" author's stories, and Tatsuya Nakadai. No masterwork but a fine, fine movie.
