Excellent acting for a story that is entirely unconvincing. Subtracting the laughable storyline, the performances are superb. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are marvelous. Even Aidan Quinn, who is usually annoying, was good. Full of crazy moments, silly witchcraft, enchantments, spells and ghosts. Pacing is great and lots of comic relief. Wonderful music. Entertaining and fun, but the plot and script are entirely silly and contrived.

I don't even understand how this movie was made? Like... It's not even really feel-good or anything????? Also can we get some Judith Butler up in here to act as a wrecking-ball to the propagation of gender essentialism and binarism as cemented by these movies. I mean good lord, help meeeeeeeee. Also, worst use of Joni Mitchell... ever.

I watched this movie in an attempt to balance the playing field after watching 300: Rise of an Empire. The estrogen reaches critical mass during the lime in the coconut scene and never lets up. Be careful with this one.

The 90's were wild. A film like this could be given a $75m budget and it was not seen as an anomaly.

Practical Magic feels like it was stitched together with scraps of other movies. The story hops from one subject to another - is it about how the curse affects their family, or realizing that your parents had their upsides, or that there isn't going to be only one True Love in your life, or being rejected by your community, or...? But the last 20 minutes actually come together; it's fun and silly and just what I'd want in a story about modern witches. If only they'd worked backward from there.

I liked it. Though, this movie had so much potential to be great.

A weirdly interesting failure. Its clear the director had far more ambition than anyone would expect for a project like this but then at some point the studios got involved and we're left with an odd mix of beautiful, sensual imagery/art direction (that surprisingly resembles the aesthetics of 70s Czech new wave!) and typical, cringe-worthy American rom-com schmaltz. I think its the awful music that's most at fault here. Imagine if they kept Michael Nyman's stunning (but "too European") score?

Sandra Bullock is incredibly charming, and the movie itself is pretty cute. But that ending? I'm sorry, but when you've spent the whole movie building up that the entire town hates your guts, they're not just going to suddenly come around and join you in witchcraft because "Oh, yeah, I've been dumped before too."

Chick-flick-of-the-Lifetime-variety meets "Bedknobs and Broomsticks", plus a dash of "The Trouble with Harry". A senseless waste of the talents of some of the best actresses around, this flick is further proof that I will watch Stockard Channing do ANYTHING (the bathetic "Staying Together" is the absolute proof of that).

Bullock is annoying in this (as she is in everything, except for maybe 'Speed') but somehow Kidman manages to add enough darkness and menace to overcome the vanilla quality of Bullock's character (or maybe it's just Bullock who is vanilla). There is a gothic fun to this that catches you by surprise and sweeps you up with its momentum. It's a lot of fun.

It's cheesy, but the set design/locations are often stunning & the actors are lovely, with great chemistry.

Practical Magic is a cute romance movie that touches on some fantastic elements but overall it's nothing special. Bullock and Kidman are witches in a New England village who are trying to navigate relationships and a family curse. Channing and Wiest are wasted in their roles here but when they do appear it is a treat. I found the story fun without much substance. The chemistry between Bullock and Quinn, the sheriff that is trying to locate Kidman's dead ex, is okay. The music is good.

Sandy and Nic are at peak cuteness, but other than that, this is pretty ordinary and disappointingly light on actual magic. The climax still slaps though.

Really not good, none of the themes touched on are explored or resolved in a satisfying way and the acting and direction is tinged with a melodramatic stench that does not charm as much as it expects to.

Kidman and Bullock are pretty great here, but the way the movie is shot and written is a piping hot mess. What the hell is it with throwing random songs into every spot available? If this is a comedy, it's not funny, if it's a fantasy movie, then the fantasy parts make no sense. Romances here make no sense and made me want to hurl. Pissed off that they wasted an Elvis and Stevie Nicks -song for this one.

The problem with previews is one expects something more in the actual movie which is going to run some 25X longer. The problem here is, while plenty cute, there's no real heat in the romance & the characters are almost
invisible when it comes to development. Mildly dull.

I LOVED this movie! I think it's the best thing Nicole Kidman has ever done (one of the only movies I've ever liked her in) and I've always loved Sandra Bullock. Dianne Weist, Aiden Quinn and Goran Visnjic are icing on the cake.

Even though it sets the bar low it still fails to be even mildly entertaining. Also Aidan Quinn can't act and is annoying as fuck to watch on screen.
