Wasn't really wowed by anything here. It's pretty much a straightforward story that didn't have much of an impact on me.

Wise and sensitive as always, in Pratidwandi Ray strikes a nice balance between character study and social observation, a sense of time-space and more universal dilemmas. It is an intricate but low-key work that plods somewhat in the middle only to finish with style and grace.

Ray doing an Angry Young Man film? Surprising, but he's no less adept with this sort of explosive material than he is with his usual more graceful fare. You can sense the frustration and anger mounting within Siddharta and his aimless everyman is wholly sympathetic. There's an incredible sense of vitality and revolution running throughout Pratidwandi, and while some of the more experimental conceits don't entirely succeed, Ray's willingness to push his own boundaries is always admirable.

In many ways I prefer this over Pather Panchali as I really related to the protagonist in this one. The film has a lot going on, Ray touches on many issues like poverty, hippies, and communism. The hopelessness of the main character is appealing and the ending is really great. Should be better known.

I've seen this twice, but I still need to see it again.

Perhaps the most "European" of Ray's movies, with a looser narrative, quick little flashbacks and fantasies, and sequences in negative. And these are the most internationally aware of Ray's characters -- they discuss Vietnam, read Playboy, go to Swedish pornos, study Che Guevara and eat Chinese food (with utensils, even!). There's some great little moments. This movie isn't as moralistic as Seemabaddha or Jana Aranya, but it does have a striking revolutionary spirit to it.
