Premium Rush is so terrible and so pretentious it almost succeeds as the summer's greatest comedy. But the film's dogged determination to be a legitimate film is its undoing. When the use of MapQuest as a plot device is one of the highlights of your film, something fundamental has gone terribly wrong. As the film lurches and stumbles towards its bland and unsatisfying conclusion, I cannot help but wonder what JG-L and Michael Shannon, two tremendous actors, thought they were getting into.

It's 2012, cycling is more popular than ever, and David Koepp has made a quirky bike-based action film which mostly manages to stay pretty entertaining despite the tone of unpleasant nihilistic recklessness which follows its characters down every one-way alley and crowded sidewalk they pedal. As a cyclist I don't know whether to be flattered by the attention, or irate at the media's latest besmirching of my passion. A hard film to take seriously, which can only be a good thing I think.

Nothing mind-blowing, but a fun chase movie that works best when it stays fast paced. Whenever it slows down, it's multiple problems, like a dumb plot and stupid gimmicks, start showing more and more. Levitt is as good as I've come to expect from him, and Michael Shannon is a blast to watch as the dumb bad guy. A fun way to spend 90 minutes, if nothing else.

Such a cool movie! There hasn't been a movie like this since Quicksilver. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was awesome in this action/thriller about bike messengers in NYC. This film had my adrenaline pumping from the very beginning. The lines were all very witty and Michael Shannon was set up perfectly as the bad guy of the movie. I also loved the direction in the film and the awesome use of GPS and an almost "Google Earth" way of showing the different bike routes. This is a must see for 2012.

For the most part this is an ambitious chase film which keeps a frenetic high energy pace. Unfortunately, it's overly reliant on gimmicks like that stupid google map overview. Joseph Gordon-Levitt also appears to have a Terminator CPU in his brain which calculates best outcomes during emergencies. The plot is paper thin and the triad gangster setup is 90's plot fodder. Shannon may have hammed it up too far but he's fun to watch. The end is premium dumb. Levitt really carries this entire film.

Better than I thought it would be! Fun chase scenes and for the most part follows a logical sequence of events. However, at times, I kinda feel like the guy in the car should have run the guy in the bike over.

There r plotholes, esp. one WTF moment that seems completely out of character 4 the hero that occurs about midway through the film, but the direction & editing of the cycling sequences (& there r plenty) is brilliantly done, & gives the film a propulsive energy. It also helps 2 have 2 great actors in the leads (even though the supporting cast looks weak in comparision). Levitt is, as usual, immensely likable as the hero & Shannon, always looking slightly uhinged, is perfect as the villain

Doesn't rise about the gimmick/premise but it's a fun enough time. There are a lot of bike chases of course and while they certainly aren't boring, they could be much more exciting than they are and at least one of two of the chases are completely unnecessary to the plot and come after much more significant chases so there's no tension whatsoever. Michael Shannon looks like he's having a ball and as usual is the highlight of the movie.

if you love economical, kinetic, irreverent, unapologetically goofy (sans irony) action flicks with a no-bullshit high-stakes plot, fuck the doubters and check it out. it feels appropriate somehow to be in the minority on this one, given its sensibilities. a corrective to numerous obnoxious action movie trends of the past ten years, and surprisingly coherent and moving thematically considering it has absolutely no need whatsoever to bother with such concerns. also michael shannon's giggle.

Are all NY bike couriers sweaty twat bags with seemingly limitless stamina? My only guess is that David Koepp would like us to think so. While the chase scenes were definitely impressive, overall it felt like the movie was trying hard to be Taxi on two wheels, and JGL ain't no Queen Latifah (which is a good thing for all of us).

Slight but very fun way to spend 90 minutes. Michael Shannon as a scenery-chewing corrupt cop (and I do mean corrupt, especially for a PG-13 movie about bike chases) is the obvious highlight but the cast is more than capable. I enjoy the way it shifts back and forth in time to build on the otherwise paper-thin story and establish characterization without ever really slowing down. It's very nicely structured, albeit gimmicky. Also good lord Dania Ramirez marry me.

A cheap, but eventually catchy street action film, filled with some chilling stunts, psycho Michael Shannon as psycho Michael Shannon and Gordon-Levitt playing the good-guy-taken-by-an-evil-scheme. The Google Map thing and the messenger's visions seem disposable, but Koepp, who wrote Spider Man for Raimi, does a similar job framing a frenzy city of frenzy jobs, where thugs and heroes act almost anonymously, while NY and new yorkers seem too busy or too late to care about what's going on.

It moves at a decent pace and it's lean enough that it doesn't drag much but the script rarely rises above uninteresting. It really feels like the kind of flat gimmicky action pap that was all over the place in the 90s. Michael Shannon is hilarious though, which counts for a decent bit, though when the bad guy is the most likeable character you've messed up somewhere. It's kind of inexplicable that this movie has the cast it does, actually, since everything other than the leads screams B-movie.

David Koepp delivers some intriguing direction that carries Premium Rush above its hackneyed and uninteresting script. Cinematography and editing give the film enough momentum to be quick and exciting. Shannon and Levitt do enough make you care about the characters. A great example of good direction overcoming an awful script.

If you like the idea of a reckless bike messenger carrying a package that the bad guys are after, and you go in with low expectations, this can be a fun movie on a Saturday night with nothing else to do. There are some preposterous moments (as there often are in films like this), but if you find a way to live with them, the film is structured in a fairly clever way and that can make this fun. (The ending is a bit of a letdown.) (Psi: 62)

I didn't care for the visual gimmicks employed, but I felt that pretty much everything else worked. The plot was simple, and I found that worked to the movie's benefit; it's all too easy to overcomplicate and under-deliver in this genre, and Premium Rush adroitly avoided that trap. The chase scenes were intense; novel and clever enough to sustain my interest. Gordon-Levitt was great, and he plays Wilee with commitment. Completely and utterly maintained my attention for the entire running time.

The action and stunts in this movie are an awesome 10--not to mention the humor, a good deal of which comes from G-L's stop-action evaluation of his options in particularly tricky traffic situations. But it really needs a much better justification for the action in the first place other than the artificially contrived purpose for the delivery which could have been bypassed by a phone call.....I think. And the ending was anti-climactic as well. Overall though, an enjoyable ride.

Tries to be a lot of things: a thriller, a comedy, an action movie...but never succeeds in any of its endeavors. All of the actors are flat and uninteresting, despite Michael Shannon really trying (what's with the 30's gangster accent?) and Dania Ramirez looking great. It was just a weak script that focused too much on looking cool rather than actually being good. It's all wrapped around a simplistic plot that is disjointed so you think it's interesting when actually it's basic as hell.

Premium Rush was a fun ride. I probably wouldn't watch the movie again, but I had a good time with it while it was here. The casting was well chosen. My main problem with the movie is the story line. I think that the concept of a movie about bike messengers in New York City sounds like a really good idea; it's something different. But, the main plot of this movie, a cop trying to get a ticket that will help pay off his gambling debts, is not one that kept me too interested in the story.

Premium Rush isn't great, and you don't need to see it, but if you want to see a film sustained solely by its chase scenes -- which last for the majority of its duration -- and characters made credible not by writing, but by performances, then you probably should give it a watch. It drags when it tries to explain back story, but for a mindless, straightforward action movie, it accomplishes its goal of being entertaining.

Despite the likely small budget, visually it's exciting and the biking sequences are enjoyable. I'm a big fan of JGL but he doesn't have to do much here. Luckily David Koepp's bicycle thriller runs a scant 85 minutes without credits, as his adrenaline pumping film wears out its welcome with a lot of backstory filler amidst some wild NYC bike chases. I didn't mind the Google Map thing, kinda iffy, but it sort of fits the theme so it's forgivable. Plot skips around a bit but, again, it's forgivable.
