Pretty Village, Pretty Flame (1996)
The film starts in the Belgrade army hospital where casualties of Bosnian civil war are treated. In the hospital they remember their youth and the war. The main focus is on two young boys, Halil (Nikola Pejakovic), a Muslim, and Milan (Dragan Bjelogric), a Serb, which have grown up together near a deserted tunnel linking the Yugoslav cities of Belgrade and Zagreb... I get that this is meant to be some kind of scathing satire of civil war, skewering its nation's self-destruction and descent into madness as it skewers its protagonists with bullets. But any subtlety must have been lost in translation. Too often, it feels like the point is being hammered home by cheesy dialogue. The film also suffered from excessive length and slow build-up. A politically charged war film which practically defines the Balkan aesthetic, but not one I'll bother coming back to.

This is the giddiest war movie I've ever seen (that isn't billed as a farce). I am impressed by the sheer size of the production, but I find it hard to swallow when a movie has this much fun with war. Kusturica gets away with it, and then some, but that's because he understands pain as well as humor. Dragojevic seems amused by everything from woman-beating to critical injury. Even when he happens upon genuine irony he usually hammers it to bits.
