Up and away the best one in the franchise since the original. I never thought I’d walk away from a Predator movie saying it’s one of this year’s best. I never realized how much I missed the survival stuff of the original until now. Midthunder is magnetic as one of the few good protagonists in this franchise. I liked this take on going against gender and cultural norms, but I also like what these writers did with the actual Predator here as well. It’s also exceptionally directed. Damn good.

It's a great take on a Hero's Journey that's only occasionally let down by silly dialogue & predictable story points. Like in 10 Cloverfield Lane, the director once again shows that he can get all of the drama out of a sci-fi action concept. Here we see how both White colonialists & space aliens prey on indigenous societies for stupid reasons. And what more can you ask in a movie that gives you a cool political point as well as some dope fight scenes? Highly recommended.

While I enjoyed Predator 2 and Predators for what they were, I think Prey is undeniably the best sequel in the franchise. Unique time period and setting, excellent protagonist, great action/tension, and Dan Trachtenberg proves once again that he’s one to keep an eye on. It’s a shame this didn’t release in theaters, but I’m glad we finally got a great Predator sequel regardless.

I thought this was kind of lame. The Predator wasn't all that threatening, making all kinds of stupid mistakes. And Naru was far too OP for some warrior from 300 yrs ago. Of course this is just fiction, but I wasn't convinced. It felt fake and cheesy. Just another modestly entertaining but throw away movie that won't be remembered past next week.

It's so nice to see an old franchise come up with a genuinely new and interesting idea like they did with Prey. We get an interesting hero who maybe isn't the best hunter, but who has an edge over others in her group with her creativity and quick thinking. The plot itself is very basic, but I feel like it works best that way. The CGI animals did bother me just a little bit, but the actual Predator himself and the tribal design of him was awesome.

Horribly boring and weak thanks to a horrendous character arc and the subtlety of a train crash. We don't know the humans, aside from Naru wanting to be a hunter and the tribe saying, "Nah, go forage woman." CGI deer and bear were horrible. Dog comes and goes when convenient. Also great how our hero says, "No, he has us," _before_ pushing an ally out of the way. The only good bits are the landscapes and that the Predator is pretty badass at times.

This is 2022. American cinema has been reduced to gazilionth iterations of tedious franchises now with inclusive/diverse heroes. And the main draw is the manufactured and illogical fight scenes, identical to all the rest that these big studio action choreographers have done for countless other movies. The sheer stupidity of the script right down to every last detail just doesn't matter. Writers bereft of a brain and their photocopied cheese are no deterrent to the target audiences.

This was rather fun, ably assisted by a fine turn from Midthunder. Violent, tense and engaging. It felt like I liked it for the same reasons that I liked Predator, although the setting gave it its own identity. Worth a look.

The heart of the film is strong and simple, pumping the runtime full of excitement and thrills, but because it succeeds in having a body, too - a badass female one in reportedly admirable Comanche regalia - it reaches and runs and occasionally stumbles, occasionally fails to grasp the highest branch in its storytelling; mainly, the predator was really just a periphery threat and deaths only made one brief and temporary impact.

Prey’s decision to keep it simple allows it to put emphasis in all the right places. The action is thrillingly (and coherently) staged, and boasts a scene of Predator v. bear combat that alone makes the film worth a look. Even the series callbacks feel organic rather than winky. It all suggests that there might be something to the idea of giving even the most beleaguered franchises one chance after another. Eventually, someone gets it right.

This was gorgeously shot and I enjoyed the action a lot, especially when Predator was slaughtering the French. Midthunder handled the heavier work and the physicality well. My only real gripe is that while I understand that Predator technology is not what it is centuries later, it's still ridiculously advanced and it feels kind of weird seeing her punk him given how behind him she is tech wise. Feels kind of inconsistent, but I understand that it's Hollywood and it shows she's a great hunter.

Watched the dub+subs version. Tries to square the brutality and gore of Predator with more graceful/elegant cinematic horror trends, which can be awkward at times but mostly works well, effectively using a natural setting and tone to tap back into the primal draw of the first movie. It's a nice change of pace for a franchise that had hit the floor of shlock valley (see: profile pic) and appeared rightly dead there.

Takes the very best thing about the first film and amplifies it: strip the story and characters down to only what they need to survive, and see if they do. The action is commanding and the setting is brilliant. Of course I watched this in Comanche - that this of all things is the first film entirely dubbed in the language is both sad and awesome. I’m all in for Indigenous horror revivals - sign me up for an Inuit version of The Thing, we’re ready.

The first I've bothered to watch since the original, and hey, it's good! Rightfully praised for its representation of the Comanche, which is functionally a rich elaboration on our dearly departed Billy: the natives are synchronized with the natural world in a way commandos are not. The deck is further shuffled by agitating gender norms, and Midthunder plays the tension so well. One reservation: the effects, particularly the plasticky wildlife, sometimes aren't as seamless as one would prefer.

The beginning is a bit slow, but the movie does a good amount in the first act to establish Naru as a skilled fighter. That said, it's very annoying to watch her excel while practicing, and then either running away or not fighting to her potential in almost every action scene besides the climax. Takes a bit for the story to eventually allow Naru's preparation to pay off, but when it does, it's great! The actual Predator scenes were freaking badass, and I really enjoyed what we got!

It is a beautifully captured film using the natural landscapes to perfection all the while adding in the fear and tension of the looming predator. Yes, we've seen the young-woman-wants-to-prove-she's-as-tough before, and it's a bit of a pity that a movie making so much of representation (and doing it well) launches from a clichéd plot. That said, what we get is still a brilliant action movie, which never breaks the 18th century illusion and covers its tracks the whole way, using a gorgeous world full of hunters jockeying for position. And Midthunder is fantastic in the lead.

A great idea, wonderful setting and pretty good acting and yet something essential missing in it. It is just not engaging, most probably it is intentional as it feels like watching a documentary, but it just removes any possible emotional involvement with it. The whole hunt part, including the animal parts, is well done but again misses an intangible quality. The way the Predator meshes into the environment plus the Comanche village is superbly done.

Also, every male will lack of proper IQ to see more than one step ahead. Including the main villain. I dunno since when was normal to see a 55 kg (121 lbs) girl killing about ten full-grown armed man in a "serious" movie. And that occurs in every modern film, not just Prey. PS: the CGI bear and the deer were so 2005.

Midthunder is excellent in the action scenes but distractingly looks and sounds like Aubrey Plaza during her dialogue. I would also have preferred if they only used primitive weapons and traps, like a extended cat and mouse version of Arnie's showdown in the original. The inclusion of the Trappers only serves to provide easy Predator fodder as well as an Easter Egg but overall Prey is very well shot and nicely revives a franchise that was nearly hunted to extinction by recent efforts.

The amount of action is nice and it is mostly well-executed, though there are WAY too many moments where the protagonist is as good as dead until the convenient timing of someone or something else intervenes and gets her out of danger. Once or twice is okay, but there are at least a dozen instances of that happening, and it's never surprising or cathartic. I found the very last beat of action to be extremely unsatisfying and also pretty illogical, which was an unfortunate way to go out

Amber Midthunder is awesome as Naru, and I love the tight simplicity of Trachtenberg's period film. We're treated to plenty of cool predator action but this might easily still have been best of the year material even if Naru had had a different opponent in those sequences. It's a really smart way to reboot the franchise.

A satisfying merging of pre-tech tribal coming-of-age ritual with the incidental presence of a more advanced threat. Straight-up, no-nonsense hunter hunting hunter in the great outdoors, combined with practical FX, is easily the film's strength. Overconfidence in weightless CGI is where it falters, & the use of cliche-driven dialogue. It'd be bolder & better to have limited the characters to their native tongue... though our visual narrative is more than capable of weaving the tale by itself.

Prey has entertains with its majestic setting & repetition of predator-prey dynamics in nature. It's well-paced making up for the simplistic & non-novel plot. Midthunder is great as the underdog, showcasing her ambition, ingenuity & will to survive before encountering the alien. However, the film is sullied by a modern trope: manufactured-misogyny. The heroine is needlessly & constantly belittled so she has something to prove. It's lazy writing that spoils a scene each time it pops up.

Love this franchise returning to the muddy, basic instinct, survivalist mode, which is helped big time by the concept of going back in time and setting it in the Comanche Nation. I'm still not sure the climax works as energetic as it should -- it drags as soon as the French fur dudes enter the plot --, but the whole thing ends up delivering the goods in the right spots -- some splatter here and there, a bunch of suspenseful hunting scenes. Midthunder is awesome.

Cliche "No you can't, yes I can, says the girl" plot. Why not start with an already badass female lead who everyone already admires & respects from the jump? Too easy? You can still have her go through tough times and prove her salt (or maybe she fails but we're not there yet). IDK. Anywho, highlights of this film are the cinematography of nature, badass Mortal Kombat style fatalities, and respect for the Comache culture. It's entertaining eye candy but nothing ground breaking or mind blowing.

Way better than a modern entry in an 80s franchise has any right to be. This is exactly what more directors need to do. Don't try to remake the first movie, don't try to reboot the franchise with new characters, just take the most beloved element of the franchise (in this case the predator) and re-contextualize it a bit. Don't reinvent the wheel, just slap it onto a new vehicle.

I can overlook the mostly iffy CGI and I can admit that this was one of the better Predator films out there, not that that's saying much. However, this has two of my least favorite tropes, or if not tropes then film script tendencies. The dialogue felt like it was written for a YA novel and the Predator design sucked ass and made zero sense, They didn't wear the faceplates for fun or as warrior masks but as a breathing apparatus-like piece of equipment. Its hands and feet didn't look right...

Prey is a perfectly okay action movie. It has some nice gore, features multiple languages, has a bunch of decent action scenes and contains a couple of clever elements (e.g. Naru figuring out the heat vision). On the negative side; the story is a bland version of Mulan, some of the CGI is kinda bad and almost every character is 2D. "Prey" may be described as a prequel, yet, it is essentially just a rehash of the original film only taking place in the 1700's. Still, if one wants to retell a story in a different time period, "Predator" is a great one to pick. I was hoping for more lore to be explained, but instead I was met with a very effective, competent installment to a somewhat tired franchise, probably one of the best disappointments I've had all year.

I was a bit skeptical the first 30 minutes or so, but from the moment the wild cat is killed and she goes back to look for the Predator the movie really comes alive. It roughly follows the formula of the original, except instead of Arnold and an elite military unit, we follow a failed hunter as she takes on a Predator. Fortunately for her, Prey introduces an alien that must have slept through the lessons on their gadgets. Sadly it relies as much on her wit as it does the alien's idiocy. It could have been a better story about personal growth - understanding the difference of hunting for sport and for survival, which it seems to bring up then drop completely.
