Oh, the pettiness of the 1800s. There's a nice wit about this period piece that I wasn't expecting, even though the storyline was the typical snobby romance that shouldn't work but does. I'm sure the large cast of characters works much better in a book; there were a few times when things suddenly accelerated in an awkward way to push the story along.

Austen is not for me, but this is as good as the others. The most entertaining part was the scene where the hysterical mother is distraught that there is no way all of her daughters will ever be married. The father replies: "Yes, what's to become of the wretched creatures? Perhaps we should have drowned some of them at birth." Now THAT'S what I call a great line! Turns it out it was not in Jane Austen's novel at all, but was a creation of screenwriter Aldous Huxley (of "Brave New World" fame).

The earliest available adaptation of the famous novel Pride and Prejudice (1940) is almost a pure comedy gold, without a hint of that subtle British manner. MGM uses some of their most popular comic characters along with their sought after beauties for a loud, broad and a strangely captivating portrayal of these upper-class flirts. Laurence Olivier & Greer Garson have the leads and both are charming in their awkward ways and at the same time manages to bring emotion into the important scenes. A

Everyone plays there role well, with the schmaltzy added lines not too much of a disturbance. Larry Olly is a fire risk with his smouldering, ably backed as Greer Garson as Elizabeth.
