The first hour of this film seems entirely confused and meandering where it dabbles noncommittally in both of its main plot points. Only in the last third does it get some momentum.

I don't get it, just because he's gay doesn't make it any harder for a priest to remain celibate--not that I'm catholic, or gay. But I do love me some Robert Carlyle.

Jimmy McGovern, scribe of the brilliant UK "Cracker" miniseries, completely shoots himself in the foot! I was rooting for the bishop more than for the "hero", who acts like a complete fool throughout

Deft blend of melodrama and tract that manages to deal with homosexuality, abuse, incest, and the politics of the Church with incisive results -- and even a dark sense of humor. Flawlessly acted.

Gay and pushed the envelope aplenty but falters in the final act

One of my favorite closing scenes of any movie I can think of. It's an interesting struggle and I love the message of grace.

Not very subtle, but it is still a very interesting morality tale.
