Private Benjamin

While the original Legally Blonde is entertaining, the film's insistence on changing genre in every act is confusing. Hawn has some great comedic timing and Eileen Brennan is absolutely worth a watch.

Frustrating, ungainly mishmash is at its best during the funny boot camp sequences, where Hawn's fish-out-of-water adjusts to army life, but film as a whole never works because the plot (and Benjamin herself) never develops, it just swings incoherently from story point to story point and doesn't end up making any sense (especially during the interminable final third). Hawn is likable, but can never get a grip on her scattered character; Brennan steals the film as the severe military commander.

Meh. Mildly amusing, but mostly forgettable.

It's a good premise and Goldie Hawn is definitely the best person for it, but it completely runs out of steam towards the end. Then there's 40 minutes that are hard to care about. Like, it feels it should've been over long before it actually ends. Not nearly enough Albert Brooks or Harry Dean Stanton, either.

Great movie with the exception of Goldie Hawn. Ugh.

I actually remember the television series more fondly than the movie. Of course the nostalgia of a six year old is far stronger than the reality of a recent viewing of the movie.

A few laughs.
