Tries too hard to make the romance story of rich boy Robert Taylor and maid Loretta Young likable. For this touches on a real dark note of servants and the control Basil Rathbone, the head-butler, has over his staff. Rathbone is the real backbone of this film with his firm and obsessed manner. They really should have gone the darker path with this one for the atmosphere was right there to do so. Instead the film turns into a random count case fix to determine if the young lovers love is real.
