Lea Massari, one of my favorite actresses, made her debut in this early Monicelli, opposite a less talented Amadeo Nazzari. Proibito bears some resemblance to Germi's "In the Name of the Law", and is rich with Italian hallmarks; it's an operatic (but not necessarily unconvincing) semi-western about rural vendettas, somewhat impaired by its crude romanticism and Catholicism. It also features a memorable horseback duel and a nice, windy, on-location Sardinian scenery.
