It's an adaptation of Auburn's acclaimed play, an origin that's often plainly apparent as individual scenes and even lengthier passages play out in such a way that it's easy to imagine them carrying great potency in the shared physicality of theater even as they wither a bit in the controlled intimacy of film. As an acting showcase for Paltrow, it is fun to watch, giving her ample opportunity to flash the sort of intelligent petulance that's one of her most engaging onscreen trademarks.

I really loved this, but maybe being a math major affected my judgment. The acting is magnificent regardless, particularly Paltrow's performance.

What was the movie where Anna Nichole Smith was acting FBI agent? Theoretical mathematics and Gwyneth Paltrow just don't match. It's a never meeting equation.

A rather morose melodrama about mathematics and mental illness. Somewhat clunky adaptation of a stage-play with some interesting moments, but, overall, this is fairly uninspired. To describe the film as “leaden” would be unfair, but Paltrow’s character in particular fails to offer much scope for her to convey anything other than blank stares and sullenness.

Aside from truly appreciating much of Anthony Hopkins work, I saw this in play format shortly after it won the Pulitzer and it is a fantastic story. The film version is a good adaptation and though in theaters may have drawn some only because of the star power of Hopkins, Gyllenhaal and Paltrow, I don't think it matters. They act their parts well. "H:they're really good. They have this song called 'i'... Like lower-cased i. They just stand there and don't play anything for three minutes."

Though the execution is not the best, the intelligent screenplay and solid leading performance from Paltrow make it an entertaining and mind-provoking, non-manipulative drama.

Lackluster performances don't help this below average adaptation of a brilliant play. Or, maybe it's my fault because I saw the play first.

The most fascinating study of the mathematical mind since Pi. Paltrow gives the performance of her career as the emotionally vulnerable prodigy, and her turn brings each scene together in a beautiful and touching story which asks us to contemplate difficult questions. The parallel timelines were confusing at first but aside from that the directing is very good, the film is shot in a lovely pure sunlight and the music is spot-on. Hopkins and Gyllenhaal also thumbs up. A hidden geek masterpiece.

Somehow, I missed this one, starring three great actors, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal. A drama involving Mathemathics, mental illness and relationships. Intelligently written and well-acted.

When I went to see this movie, I was hoping for a math story with a little romance in it. Instead, I got a love story with very little to do with math other than they are mathematicians. I was seriously disappointed.

A distinct, but very paled and washed-out looking style. The story is kinda hard to follow, with all the flashbacks, plus you're never sure what is real and what is not. But if you carefully and patiently follow it through the first two acts, the third is rather rewarding. Also, I'll point to this movie the next time someone asks me what 'mansplaining' is.

This movie kind of butchered a good play. It could have been a lot worse though. Anthony Hopkins in great as usual but the awkward adaptation of the script, like the recent film of Doubt, leaves much to be desired. Especially to fans of the play.

Especially notable for being perhaps the best naturalistic depiction of extreme introversion (schizoid, paranoid) I have ever seen.
