Sadistic, relentless, merciless, brutal and shockingly violent, Punisher: War Zone is one of the most aggressive, dark and bloodied crime films of 2008, staying true to the novels. Seriously, this makes Hostel look like a walk in the park. Demonstrating some cool, awesome action scenes, it's a sheer amount of enjoyment. However, there are completely faceless, dull performances from the cast, along with an incompetent plotline. Still, it's a solid outing from Alexander.

This comes closer than anything I've seen to Boondock Saints done right. We actually see cogent arguments against vigilantism, interesting characterization, and some awesome cinematography. I wanted to really love the film, but unfortunately the plot and direction gradually sour, turning samey and predictable.

It's like if Dredd had sex with Hobo with a Shotgun and played it somewhat straight. There are token arguments against vigilantism, but they're eventually drowned out by Castle's utter righteousness and ability to defeat every shitty criminal he's up against. My lord, this is most violent action movie I've ever seen. If anybody ever suggests women can't shoot action (which, hello, Kathryn Bigelow?), point here.

Perfect transposition of the spirit of the comic book, and given the same scope of audience appeal, doomed to box office failure. Which is a shame because this was a great action/comedy with appropriate pacing, gore and minimal exposition. Brief touches of dark humor and a tongue in cheek self awareness had me cheering on several occasions.

Dare I complain? Sure. There's no reason that even the most uninteresting one-dimensional character in any art form (at least Rambo has some zen thing and the T1000 learned about humanity) can't be in a better movie than this. 2 b fair the writers are obviously trying2 make things more interesting by giving Big Pun a crisis of conscience & throwing in comedy, but none of it works. Not as laughably bad as the last one w/ Travolta this one plays more like it was pulled from the bargain bin in 1985

Well, that was entertaining as hell. Dominic West really went apeshit overboard, Stevenson looks like Chris Benoit, Newman was perfect as Microchip, there's lots of blood and guns, and this was all kinds of fun. I loved the crap out of this.

Easily superior to the previous one with Thomas Jane. The dialogue is a little weak, the outcomes are predictable, but the villains are fun. Stevenson is tough as nails. And if you came to see legions of stuntmen convulsing in their death throes as tiny fountains of red Karo come out, then you came to the right place.

A film that so precariously rides the fine line between joyously insane and disturbingly graphic that it's almost fetishistic, "Punisher: War Zone" is, for the most part, entirely competent, well-shot, intentionally over the top, and all with a killer rock soundtrack to boot, but there are a number of moments, moments where Castle punches a goons face into a bloody pulp, or often worse, when it's nothing less than sick. Mostly fun, sometimes off-puttingly dark, and inescapably middling.

Slighty better than the last one. Closer to the Marvel Comics source material, the extreme violence and sadistic dark humour is very satisfying. I liked everything about this movie, but this is definitly not for everyone to see and to others a major dissappointment to most the hardcore Punisher fans. To me this is a what a Punisher movie should be.

Punisher: War Zone is a really fun movie. It's not much more than that; there's nothing intellectually stimulating or a deeper message than "crime is bad", but it's really enjoyable to watch. Since it doesn't take itself too seriously, the audience can have a good time while watching it. It's not a perfect movie, and if you aren't a fan of the action and special effects in B-movies, but if you can tolerate somewhat cheesy and campy action films, then you'll probably have a good time.

I'm really tempted to give this movie a perfect score based solely on the incredible rocket launcher scene (if you've seen it, you know what I'm referring to), but alas, it is far from perfect. Stevenson sells his character, and Hutchison is pretty humorous, but mostly everything else is forgettable.

Fans of Punisher will enjoy this film. I like the idea of using the Marvel Knights label to produce this movie. I think more could have been done with that label if this movie had done better. The acting is fair. The story is standard. They do a good job of introducing Punisher's backstory without having to base the entire movie on it. Jigsaw, the enemy in this movie, was really good. He was mean and sadistic. I could probably watch this movie again.

The kind of over-the-top, no holds barred actioner that depending on mood, could result in a slightly higher score (even before the now-I’ve-seen-everything of Wayne Knight as a brutal crime figure!) What perhaps holds this back from an objectively higher rating is that the film plays out with a lack of a sense of humour – the violence and kills are outlandish, but not especially “fun”, and outside of the inspired casting of Knight, none of the performers seem especially excited to be here.

I've always considered The Punisher to be a whining pussy of a character, but this adaptation wisely relegates Castle's back story to a very brief flashback and focuses on the gory comic book murder. Seriously, there's more blood and brains in this movie than a lot of horror flicks. Dominic West's accent is pathetic but I think he was doing it on purpose as his cartoonish villain is completely ludicrous (in a good way). Ray Stevenson's Punisher outfit looked pretty cool too.

"Punisher: War Zone" is probably the weakest film version of the comic book hero. For a big part it plays like a middling actioner: competent action and a pretty rough script. It's also the most violent of the three films, yet, for all the immediate 'wow' factor of the graphic deaths, the director seems unable to strike up a consistent atmosphere. Still, the Punisher accidentally killing one of the good guys is a welcome variation and, mainly, the final act is a definite, rewarding highlight.

The beginning action sequence was aaaawful. In fact, I don't think there was a decent action sequence until the end which was pretty decent. The acting was horrible, for the most part (except for The Punisher). I appreciate dark humour but I really didn't see much of it. I just saw lame scene after lame scene. It was pretty dark but the gore was just there to be gore, and that gets boring. I wish I could appreciate it as unintentional hilarity but it wasn't even funny enough for that.

I am genuinely confused about this. You know how many industry insiders could have stopped this film from being released? There's agents, studio executives, producers, all of whom were dutifully bound to stand up and say "NO! We will not let the film industry be made a mockery of! You are a common douche!" But they didn't... and here, for your viewing pleasure, is the aftermath.

Lets be honest Punisher films have always been a letdown... Saying that this one is better than the others but is still not great. This is the closed the films have come to the comics but it still misses the mark. Ray Stevenson makes for a far better and believable Frank Castle than Thomas Jane managed but part why though seems to be alittle bored of his one-man war. The saving grace of this film is the action scenes which are good. Good for a rental if you like action films and gore

This may have the look and feel of Garth Ennis' Punisher MAX series, but it lacks any deep insight into what Castle is all about. They basically threw out all of the wit from Tom Jane's 2004 Punisher, and replaced it with ultra-hardcore meaningless violence held together by a by-the-numbers plot.

"Punisher: War Zone" is a brutal assault on all counts. Granted, it is a movie called "Punisher," but at least the outing in 2004, while about as dark and violent, didn't revel in campy blood-squirting idiocy. Thomas Jane played a soul-scarred man; Ray Stevenson plays a 2-dimensional prop, surrounded by a lousy plot and terrible actors across the board. Sure, the action hits you like a maul, but it's about as shallow a film as you'll ever see, completely soulless from opening to closing credits.

Ultra violence is all War Zone has going for it. Couple of cool parts in the mixture of countless poor action scenes. Punisher himself is such an unlikable twat, lets kill people for petty crime! One of the most underrated films of recent memory. So audaciously stupid and gory, but most of all funny and intentional (but not tongue-in-cheek, these people obviously wanted to make this movie, not make fun of it). It's all about the violence, and it's all really slapsticky and well-done, and aesthetically faithful to the comic. More akin to the goofier Japanese action-gore flicks than say Saw or Hostel, but I'd take Looney Tunes over Leatherface most days anyway.

Brutal. One word description. The fighting is brutal, but the script is just as brutal. However, the filmmakers seemed to achieve exactly what they set out to do, instead of making some watered-down would-be superhero movie like the Thomas Jane version. (Travolta should have as little to do with action movies as possible in my opinion.) If this movie has a sequel, I'll be there on opening night. This was over-the-top hardcore action, it was gory, but it was really good.

The movie is closer to the comics but thats the only plus it gets. Drama, non existend; story, well there are some dialogs between Frank punishing someone; action, well it looks comic-wise. In the end, Punisher:War Zone is another example of how bad a good superhero movie needs a very good villain and in that departmend this one fails miserably. The Punisher looked as a movie (story telling, action and characters) back in 2004 way better than this one.

I was worried about how this would follow up the awesome Thomas Jane punisher, but it doesn't follow at all. It instead creates a new timeline, essentially reworking Punisher's past. The action is awesome, and there is a lot of it. If the 2004 Punisher is a reboot, is this a re-reboot? I dunno, but whatever it is, it works for me.

It's quite stylish and the over-the-top action scenes certainly entertain. The movie itself is quite brutal as people often get their heads broken apart, though you can't take it quite seriously as Frank Castle manages to punch through someone's face. However I couldn't help but shake my resentment towards Frank Castle's endless murder of villians. At the end of the film we're lead to believe he kills someone that wanted to steal a wallet. Sorry, but I don't consider that justice by any means.

After listening to the podcast with Patton Oswalt and the director, I had to give this one a shot. It's a lean film story-wise, referencing an origin story without being bogged down by it. But who cares about that, the best parts are the Punisher taking on a colorful array of badguys. My favorite is Looney Bin Jim, played by Doug Hutchison, who was also great as the pyromaniac in Give 'Em Hell Malone.

I found this Punisher to actually be much better than the Thomas Jane one. It's got good intense action, two solid villains and is rightfully gory and dark where the other Punisher incarnations cheaped out. Yeah it's kind of dumb and the plot isn't anything that special, but it isn't trying to be. This is a very fun action film that is quite underrated.

You know what? This movie is just great. It's completely insane, it definitely doesn't paint Frank as a "heroic antihero" as much as "less evil psychopath, compared to the more-evil psychopaths he's killing." This movie is everything "The Expendables" tried - and failed - to be. The action is so over-the-top it approached Piranha 3-D levels, and the movie is better for it.

It nails the look and feel of the Punisher MAX series, and in terms of pure action, the movie delivers an aggressively over-the-top display of merciless killings. Still, it leaves much to be desired -- the acting especially, though I quite enjoyed Dominic West's ridiculous performance. Stevenson looks the part but he never really embodies it the way Tom Jane did. That said, I had a lot more fun with this film incarnation than the last. Goes a bit too far at times, but it was otherwise enjoyable.

Considering the premise, and what it's adapting, this should have ditched any attempt at seriousness and just become a gory exploitation film if it couldn't get a properly dark and thoughtful story from the material. While it has the potential to be ridiculous, neon-lit and enjoyable trash, it just ends up as another convoluted action film which forces in a subplot cliché about a innocent woman and her little child in a feeble attempt for emotion.
