A very sweet and moving story, although it has a few amateurish marks of first film syndrome.

Learning to drown out old people ramblings while pretending to care is some real shit. Very much a debut film but it touches on some important issues of second-generation immigrants and treatment of old folks across cultures.

Quite a few human moments, but also way too much expository dialogue and exaggerated story moments.

An absorbing and direct film about love, family, culture and modernisation.

I wanted to like this, but it's just so clunky. Bad acting, clichéd script. And it's not helped by the region 4 DVD, with its off-centre transfer (so many boom mics) and bad subtitling. A mediocre, inauspicious beginning.

Ang Lee delivers a surprisingly affecting debut about the complexity of identity, and the traps (and pleasures) of erecting cultural barriers. Jin Long's cinematography is subtle, yet vibrant.
