Pyewacket

Chappaquiddick is the tale of a young, goth Ted Kennedy who, after 90 minutes of closeups, tries to kill his mom by summoning the Ring's Sadako from a tree.

three words: worst. mom. ever. pyewacket is so focused on going beyond the usual jumpscare routine (which is commendable in its own right), that it somehow forgets to leave you with something to be scared of. and even when it tries, you're probably still too concerned with the bigger mysteries: why does everything feel so painfully hemphisted and wrong? why does this teenage "goth" girl do everything she's told? and why did they choose a title that sounds like an old british sports tradition?

Pyewacket is a really solid horror movie ... until the ending, which leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. It is still a fun enough ride to recommend even with the ending as it is.

An excellent building of mystery and apprehension. I could see where the movie was probably heading, which is clever. The acting was excellent, but the script was weak in establishing a good motive for the young woman's actions. A rewrite of the script in this area would make for better storytelling. The young woman also seemed to act stupidly at times, such as not understanding basic first aid. These mundane things pulled me out of the movie more than any of the supernatural stuff.

Maybe this is how a modern-day Evil Dead remake would turn out if they'd ever made one, which of course they never did. Commendable in its low-intensity build, but never really knows what to build from or to.

WTF?

Great first thirty minutes, that focuses on drama like Hereditary. Then, the next 40 or so minutes of building tension and being eerie, although a bit slow, even by my standards for slow burn horror. Then the finale... I expected some scary stuff after all that build up. Instead I was questioning the protagonist, while somewhat understanding what was going on in her head, then it ended. No fun, hardly any scares or creature reveal. It’s mostly good, but disappointing as well.

I have always known that Carach Angren and HIM are cut from the same cloth.

A wasted idea but is not boring.

watchable

Thinly conceived, blandly executed occult horror. Plotting is exceedingly spare, with not much by way of character development or atmosphere to make up for it. The rotagonist and her "rebellious outsider" friends are almost laughably mild and lacking in any kind of personality. They sit in front of the camera like water-logged saltine crackers. The titular demon is also a dud. It's almost like they forgot to make a movie.
