The evil deeds of the characters surrounding Pyshka are underlined by the way they eat, the way they cast their glances, the way they generally behave. Absolute selfishness during their long talks and gestures - they don't care about Pyshka and even about each other while everyone has his/her own fish to fry; cruelty at its usual humane worst - when they are saved, they spit onto their saviour; emptiness and lack of soul - aimless drinking and playing cards... Got to love the tragic hypocrisy! I saw the silent version of this Soviet movie and it's really clever done! Group of people travel by stagecoach, but are stopped by the enemy at a roadblock and have to stay because the officer wants to have sex with one of the ladies. The lady however doesn't want to do it, but the rest of the travelers including nuns do their utmost to persuade. And what transpires is absolutely disgusting human behavior. The type that gave me a great big smile of anger.
