Bizarre yet charming in a scooping horse dung off the streets sort of way.

One of Gene Wilder's earliest starring roles, he plays an affable, carefree Dublin manure salesman, who has a bittersweet romance with an American exchange student (Margot Kidder). It's fairly twee, and for the most part just imposes quirky characteristics on a predictable romantic comedy-drama narrative. But Wilder is excellent, and Kidder does pretty well for herself as well; it also gives us a good look at Dublin circa 1970. A few interesting directoral touches; nice score by Michael Dress.
