Painfully artsy but in a self-aware and satirical way. The romance the main characters chase is as realistic and deep as Jacques' uninspired colour blocked paintings. It's a story of two people who desperately want to be in love but who don't understand what that means and seek absurd, romanticised ideas of love. I found this painful to watch at first but as it became clearer to me that the film was mocking, rather than endorsing, their naive notions of love, I came to enjoy it quite a lot.
