Que la bête meure

If you can suspend your disbelief long enough to ignore the extraordinary coincidence that occurs about one-third of the way through, this film is an interesting and atmospheric examination of revenge, and more importantly, grief. As the plot unfolds, Chabrol throws in a number of twists and turns, offering different motives and different suspects for what eventually occurs later in the film. The conclusion is pleasingly ambiguous and gives the viewer plenty to think about.

Excellent thiller with a twisting plot tempered by a simple and honest naturalism.

The premise took a while to really grow on me. I got there, though. Continues the trend of excellent, thought-provoking final moments from this director's best period of work.

Nice style - content not so much.

A very watchable if never gripping revenge tale that just does what the story demands, based on a novel by Daniel Day-Lewis's father. The character of "the beast" is very well drawn and Yanne's performance is probably the highlight.

Interesting revenge movie.

Taut psychological thriller marred by some slightly wooden acting. There are some nice symbolic touches though.

With 'This Man/Beast Must Die', Chabrol combines a thoughtful script with gripping suspense, gluing them together in a naturalistic way that is at once convincing and effective. The plot is complicated but never contrived, and the acting is strong across the board. It's both smarter and more involving than your average revenge film. One of the best I've ever seen, in fact.

Some of the procedural elements are pretty farfetched, but overall the story rings true. Didn't include the twist I was expecting, which I suppose is to its credit.

Had Hitchcock had a humanist bent. A strange blend, but quite worthy.
