Great noir. You really feel bad for poor Mickey Rooney by the end of it. Lorre floats through this one.

This is a really enjoyable "out of the frying pan, into the fire" situation. Maybe not as hard-edged as I usually prefer my noir, but the story moves at a rapid clip and never slows down. And I don't mean to imply it's light-hearted, although there is some amusement in how incompetent the protagonist is at committing crimes. There's a simplistic but entertaining good girl/bad girl dichotomy. Some beautiful lighting and shot composition as well. Exciting, fun, and memorable.

The acting was fine in this movie but the script was very contrived. The script really ruined this movie as it was totally unbelievable. It would have been nice to see more of the great Peter Lorre as well.

Good film.

Lorre is entertaining and Rooney is a good fit for this role of a chump who digs himself an increasingly deeper hole of trouble. But these are my least favourite types of noirs and even though the film tries to build things up reasonably it's just too absurd for me to fully buy in.

Between Mickey Rooney and Peter Lorre, it's safe to say that Jeanne Cagney's femme fatale had a thing for short guys.

A fun little movie that played out like an Alfred Hitchcock presents episode. Mickey Rooney was good here as was Jeanne Cagney but they just didn't mesh well together. The ending was kind of weak especially after the great build up where Dan tries to go on the lamb.

Not a Rooney fan in this. Doesn't have the chops. Lorre is great as usual. Story is a little too hokey

Mickey Rooney vs Peter Lorre. The clash I didn't know I needed! Too bad they didn't do more about their rivalry for the climax, but whenever they did encounter, it was pure gold! Especially around that screwy Cagney sister. Really enjoyed this one and it was a effective way for Rooney to wipe off that clean MGM image of his.

Rooney co-financed this movie with Peter Lorre (who shows up as the owner of an amusement arcade) to break away from his youthful musical comedy image. It works pretty well for him ... he's kind of like a shorter, low rent Jimmy Cagney (appropriate since he's play opposite his sister). The descent into criminal hell sometimes strains credulity, but it's a fun outing all around. If you want to see Rooney and Lorre get into a physical scrap, here you go.
