Like a badass western movie, but in Australia. Probably a better rating than this deserves, but this movie has a special place in my heart being that its the first western my dad showed me.

Dumb and dull "western" set in Australia

Apart from its outback setting, a conventional and unoriginal Western, given perfunctory treatment.

Starts off horribly but thankfully it does improve. It never actually reaches an impressive quality but it at least becomes watchable. The main problem with the film is that it's absolutely jam-packed with stereotypes. Women are emotional rollarcoasters, the gruff, spitting American with an unbeatable dry wit, the goofy English with their monocles. It'll pass the time for one watch but I can't say I'd recommend it when there are plenty of better westerns out there.

A mostly forgettable film with Selleck totally unconvincing as a sharpshooter and Rickman just playing the Rickman archetype. Mendelsohn is convincing as an Irishman. However, the depiction of genocide of the Aboriginal population is accurate which is more than can be said about most films set during/not long after British colonisation of Australia. The Fremantle port scenes were filmed in my small hometown of Warrnambool.

A fun western. The Australia take is nice.

Not a terrific movie, but Sellick is, as always, easy going and charismatic.

Poorish Aussie western is made a little more tolerable by Selleck's charm San Giacomo's giant rack, and of course Alan Rickman.

A fun, light hearted diet western gumbo with a little bit of every genre for the sake of mass appeal. This might not please purists, but it made a great popcorn flick. And San Giacomo was smoking in this.

Saw this one several times years ago. It holds up very well. Original movie with a very likeable lead and has plenty of action, romance and comedy. Some serious drama mixed in as well, and it all blends nicely together. Bonus: Alan Rickman played another iconic villain.

W3E1P0S1V1M1A1R2. Cliche in every way, but a good slice of cliche silliness?

An extremely corny western, but most of the time I couldn't help but laugh. I'd recommend it for the one-liners.

pretty cool and original western movie, if not for the fucking goddamn love interest subplot

Spectacularly miscast and mostly ill-conceived, what with its unsavory racial paternalism and its lighthearted treatment of trauma-induced mental illness and its goofy omnipresent score, but not entirely without its moments -- all of which are provided by Alan Rickman. "Some men are born in the wrong century. I think I was born on the wrong continent."

Matthew Quigley: I like his looks. I love his sense of humor. I like his coolness under fire. I love his big gun. I love his proficiency with his big gun. I love his willingness to use his big gun in defense of the innocent. Crazy Cora: I love her looks. I love her sense of humor. I like the love story, the action, and the adventure in this movie, but most of all, I love this movies sense of humor.

Laura Giacomo was hilarious as the crazy girl. Tom Selleck was also enjoyable in this cooky story about a gunslinger with a conscience.

I've got a soft sports for westerns, even westerns as generic and mostly forgettable as this. I guess Tom Shelleck and Alan Rickman are not forgettable, so that is something.

A decent Western, although not very convincing. The backdrop of Australia, and the Aborigines instead of the usual Indians was a pleasant change. BUT, what was with Quigley (Selleck) saying "shit" from time to time? Did people used to use "shit" as an expletive in the 1800s?!

The dull elements (most involve Laura San Giacomo) are compensated by good old-fashioned action (Roger Donaldson?), cinematography and score.

In spite of an extremely mundane plot and a horrible title, this movie succeeds on the back of its entertaining cast. Laura San Giacomo is big but lovely, Selleck has a stoic charisma, Rickman is at the height of his only-plays-villains run, and Ben Mendelsohn hasn't got his growl yet. It is a lot of fun. But, again, it is about a guy who has a cool gun. That's it.
