Quiz Show (1994)

An idealistic young lawyer (Rob Morrow) working for a Congressional subcommittee in the late 1950s discovers that TV quiz shows are being fixed. His investigation focusses on two contestants on the show "Twenty-One": Herbert Stempel (John Turturro), a brash working-class Jew from Queens, and Charles Van Doren (Ralph Fiennes), the patrician scion of one of America's leading literary families. Based on a true story. (imdb)

The president of NBC has to testify in front of a grand jury for this and when I change channels Bear Grylls is drinking his own pee while I can hear cars driving by on the off screen super highway next to where they're filming.

A phenomenally compelling story, and a surprisingly nuanced look at the human psyche. The movie refracts the question of moral wrongs and rights through a brilliant, character-driven drama about a quiz show scandal, and it is glorious.

A decent back up when you want to watch a movie about trivia and learn the disappointing truth about Double Jeopardy.

Great direction and performances. I don't know (or care) how historically accurate this is. I loved that Van Doren wasn't simply an evil antagonist, thinking only of greed. The character was written (and portrayed) in a beautifully nuanced way that made the whole drama so much richer than it would have been if painted with a broader brush.

Great performances by all three main actors, but it's a shame the focus on them is so uneven. The film can essentially be split in thirds, with each focusing on Stempel, Goodwin and van Doren respectively. It's not necessarily problematic, but it gave the story a focus on simply what happened rather than why it happened. That said, the ending is one of the bleakest I've seen in a while -- more reminiscent of Network than anything else.

An engaging film exploring the moral issues behind the glow and glitz cast by television. A good film. Looks like television got us.

Superbly written and acted, that being said , might be a little dry for some viewers.

This was good. Very much Oscar bait, but still. It's based on an interesting true story. I enjoyed watching stuff about the early days of television, and the power (perceived or real) it had. All the performances were good. Yeah, it was a little by-the-numbers, but I liked it. Also, Martin Scorsese's cameo was odd. But cool, I suppose.
