The president of NBC has to testify in front of a grand jury for this and when I change channels Bear Grylls is drinking his own pee while I can hear cars driving by on the off screen super highway next to where they're filming.

A phenomenally compelling story, and a surprisingly nuanced look at the human psyche. The movie refracts the question of moral wrongs and rights through a brilliant, character-driven drama about a quiz show scandal, and it is glorious.

Great direction and performances. I don't know (or care) how historically accurate this is. I loved that Van Doren wasn't simply an evil antagonist, thinking only of greed. The character was written (and portrayed) in a beautifully nuanced way that made the whole drama so much richer than it would have been if painted with a broader brush.

This was good. Very much Oscar bait, but still. It's based on an interesting true story. I enjoyed watching stuff about the early days of television, and the power (perceived or real) it had. All the performances were good. Yeah, it was a little by-the-numbers, but I liked it. Also, Martin Scorsese's cameo was odd. But cool, I suppose.

Great performances by all three main actors, but it's a shame the focus on them is so uneven. The film can essentially be split in thirds, with each focusing on Stempel, Goodwin and van Doren respectively. It's not necessarily problematic, but it gave the story a focus on simply what happened rather than why it happened. That said, the ending is one of the bleakest I've seen in a while -- more reminiscent of Network than anything else.

I don't get it. Who cares if it was fake or not? It certainly doesn't seem like something Congress should be wasting its time with. My morals just don't jive with the movie's and it really hampers my enjoyment.

A film about inconsequentiality that feels consequential, if you care about our culture. Although the morality of the rigging doesn't end up with much legal repercussions, the examination this film has on deadening entertainment made even more redundant by its total fakeness is hugely relevant to our society, now conveyed through reality TV and reaction videos. This film ultimately conveys a mournful mood towards our culture (all helped by great editing, and some surprising characterisation).

Set in a world where morality has been replaced by profit and pretty much everything is being powered and motivated by money, firmly directed by Redford and with a great acting ensemble (most notably Turturro and Scofield), "Quiz Show" manages to engage and sometimes even thrill despite the lukewarm introductory part.

I was curious how the press and the relevant characters were treated and dealt with the situation at hand. As with most films, it's a bit slow to build the plot but I thought the social commentary side of it was quite intriguing, with looks being promoted over assumed intelligence (regarding hopes of gaining raings etc.). I thought it was a well made film which tells an interesting story,

I first saw this film when it came out, and it seemed rather ordinary. However, it stands the test of time rather well, and does a good job at highlighting how meaningless television shows really are. (The news, of course, being a show, too.)

(Viewed on 05/01/14): Quiz Show is easily Redford's best directorial effect, a probing investigation into a late 1950's quiz show scandal that shocked a nation. It takes a while to move, and Morrow was miscast, but it is a compellingly murky morality play about an intellectual who becomes a national celebrity after participating in a game show fix. Turturro is great as a disgruntled whistleblower and the film effectively conveys the depressing all pervasive reach of the mass media's influence.

Casting Martin Scorsese as the pharmaceutical representative was pitch perfect. The entire movie was cast near-perfectly, in fact. The only thing that could make it better would be if Robert Redford from 1972 could have been the intrepid congressional aid. Love that man.

Snappy dialogue saved this from being a chore to sit through. This movie places great weight on a scandal that seems so obvious and minor compared to everything else that was going on at the time. Even the characters in the film say that the hearings have nothing on the McCarthy show. It's pretty unsatisfying.

This is fantastically classic. Redford directs with confident, intelligent, subtle decisions. The script doesn't necessarily mine for much high drama, but I'd say that's where its strengths lie. The acting is brilliant, the pacing is perfect, and the story fascinating with far-reaching cultural implications that are even more dour today, twenty-odd years later. Here, still waters run deep.

It's an investigative story set in a particular time--similar to a film like JFK or Zodiac. And while the stakes aren't high because of a lack of violence, the story is still timely. Redford and his writers find a great way to tie the main dramatic mystery into the times. And as such you get a great detail on how some aspects of the fifties: intellect, privilege, racism, and even fame, didn't necessarily die, but took on new forms. Fiennes and his father are amazing, in two great performances.

Kind of boring. Just couldn't get into it. Not even my beloved Turturro could make it entertaining, and he was working overtime. Fienes character was also well played, well cast. The casting was good, dialogue wasn't bad. It was just kind of slow, quiet, and predictable. Not much zest, sparkle or surprise to hook you. No especially sympathetic characters.

Robert Redford's portrait of the 50s quiz-show rigging scandal, centering around "Twenty-One" contestants Herb Stempel (John Turturro), Charles Van Doren (Ralph Fiennes), and Congressional investigator Richard Goodwin (Rob Morrow). It's both an entertaining history lesson and interesting if not terribly deep look at conscience and celebrity culture, solidly made and well-acted (though Turturro is a little too broad). I can't see THAT much rewatch value in it, but it's a worthy film nonetheless.

Tense and engaging in that typical way these "true story" cons tend to be, but I won't act like I'm above that kind of entertainment. Especially when it's backed up by the great performances of Turturro and Fiennes. Redford's direction is very uninvolved, however, making this more of a literal story than one with things to say beyond its plot. That's its missed opportunity to be a classic.
