The village meeting scene is outstanding. I enjoy Mungiu's approach, employing longer shots, though I would say that if ur going to do that, you need to leave me with better imagery, not that this is bad or anything. With that said, it's nice to see this subject matter in a different country. I agree with NBP, making the townspeople a faceless mob is a wasted opportunity to craft something smarter than most movies. The ending is thematically rich but a little odd given the realism of the rest.

Observant, powerful, depressing work of realism about xenophobia and racism running rampant, religion's complicity, and how "democracy" is redefined to accommodate these attitudes. Mungiu hints to education as the only wildcard.

"R.M.N." addresses xenophobia through powerful storytelling and vivid imagery. Mungiu's realistic style, combined with strong performances from Grigore, Bârlădeanu, and State, highlights the universality of xenophobia. A gripping 17-minute town meeting scene demonstrates Mungiu's filmmaking prowess. However, the film falters in developing the townspeople, who become a faceless mob rather than nuanced characters, diminishing the emotional impact and connection to the overall narrative.

The film showcases mob rule, while also highlighting the bread company's role in offering unlivable wages. However, R.M.N. is overshadowed by Bad Luck Banging, which has a more engaging premise and comical absurdity. Despite heavy symbolism, Mungiu's characters remain complex, with the focus on Matthias—an unconventional choice whose problem-solving creates more issues.

Good portrait of things that (can) happen in a Romanian village society, but the last 3 minutes of the movie totally put me off - where did that come from? https://movies.stackexchange.com/questions/120011/what-does-csilla-s-apology-mean-in-the-final-scene-of-r-m-n

Based on real incidents that happened in the Romanian village of Ditrău in 2020, Mungiu paints a really ugly picture of the xenophobic reaction to having three foreign workers in their town, but he also is pretty careful to portray just how complex the cultural and economic circumstances are. It's a sobering film that resonates with events all over the world, not just Romania.

"The ones uphill fight the ones downhill." "...Why?" "It's tradition." "We haven't had any ethnic problems here since we got rid of the gypsies." Would make a very nice double bill with (the superior, but related in more than one way) No Bears. Not just for the ending.
