Very good movie Granted I know little about Owen's real life, but I felt it was accurate to the time period and racial tensions that were going on

Stephen James is great in the lead role and Jason Sudeikis is also very good here. The script is interesting and there are a number of good scenes in this movie. Overall I would recommend this film.

A fairly strong biopic with a talented and likable cast. It isn't gonna stick with you, but you won't be losing anything watching it.

If you want to tell a story set in the 30s', then you should do it more accurately. Race was made with too much subjectivness of today. Historically I am not convinced of the sentiment protrayed in the movie. Not to mention the poor acting or the boring narrative. I am sorry, but I thought it was bad. 34/100.

No one could accuse Race of being great filmmaking. Director Stephen Hopkins merely goes through the paces, plodding when he needs to sprint, and has a better record on TV (24, Californication, House of Lies) than he does with such movie drool as Blown Away, Lost in Space and The Reaping. Luckily, Race boasts a great subject to pin a movie on.

This film faulters because Jesse Owens the primary focus of the film is the least fleshed out character in the entire film. It hinders the more dramatic moments of the film because the script failed to make us really invested in the big moments. The content of Race was engaging if at times a bit watered down for PG purposes. It was a run of the mill biopic that went above the run time it should have a clocked in at. For a man who ran all his races in nearly 10 seconds, this film sure did drag.

An enjoyable biopic, and I got a kick out of the period recreations (especially as an OSU alum). But it's also entirely by the numbers, and delves into a weirdly apologetic portrayal of Leni Riefenstahl.

Race loses speed when it injects foul and profane language into the story. And Jesse's life is morally complex enough that it certainly deserves the PG-13 rating this movie was given. Parents will need to walk through some of his decisions and actions with their kids, should families choose to engage with this bit of cinematic history telling. (pluggedin.com)

There's one scene in Race that really captures a unique and interesting perspective that Owen's probably experienced during the Olympics, but the rest of the film is a retread, boring biopic/sports picture with little depth.

Subtlety is out the window from the title card of RACE, which suits the film just fine. Jesse Owens gets his due, but like a lot of films that examine sports' broader political or social impact, the characters tend to be reduced to symbols. RACE at least tries mixing it up in its subplots: one about the U.S. Olympic Committee's political maneuvering is fascinating; another attempting to restore the honor of filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl is just...weird.

Nothing like an excellent biopic on athletics and politics to perk up a weak year so far, although it does go wanting for better direction in some spots. It gets most of the history right, including the politics, although Owens carried a picture of him shaking hands with Hitler. He even told a Republican political rally for blacks later that year, "Hitler didn't snub me - it was our president (FDR) who snubbed me. The president didn't even send me a telegram", nor was he invited to the White H

Race tells a story that's worth seeing, but I'm unconvinced that this is the film in which to see it; Jesse Owens deserves better. Stephan James is a good actor and he delivers a great performance here - all the performances are good; the acting isn't the film's problem - but it goes toward a film that doesn't give us a whole lot of depth or detail about its protagonist. It's too interested in improving the public image of a Nazi propagandist to do that. [Full Review]
