Nice-guy bookie Dan Gannin plans to quit the racket; he's opening a new night club with his torch-singing sister as main attraction. But Dan's best friend Hal runs afoul of "protection" crooks, and Dan goes after them like a one-man police force despite the admonishments of Lt. Barney Runson. But there's one thing Dan didn't bargain on. (imdb)

Worth a watch. There are some pretty cool moments, some pretty witty dialog, but really, there are too many dead spots to make this a really good flick. The actors are mostly all stiff. That said, there's an amazing song where you think the actress is floating in air for most of it, until you realize the background isn't rear-projected. Also, it's refreshing to see a pro-cop noir that doesn't make them moral saviors. William Bendix, per usual, steals the show in a supporting role.

George Raft in a familiar night club setting for a good crime movie that was also a little forgettable. The whole thing was almost too familiar to stand-out. Cool with a slightly toned down William Bendix, though.
