Bizarre in a way that was only possible - or permissible - in the '70s.

Under-rated and virtually unknown, this animated musical by Richard Williams (WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT) has some stunning work in it and is a good deal better than most Disney product from the same period. Probably too too cute for some.

Often times, attempts at combining moments for different ages in family films creates a mess but it's perfectly pulled off here to create something really special. It's because the characters are innocent while the world is huge and dangerous. The movie does lose momentum half way and seems a bit unfinished, but it's still something special none the less.

I really liked this movie as a kid, and I think it's because it worked so well with my undiagnosed ADHD. It is SO much, in a baffling and compelling way. The Greedy sequence alone expresses something that a lot of artsy erotic horror is trying to get at, an enthralling yet repulsive sensuality that sears itself upon the mind; and the hallucinations of the depressed, suicidal Camel with Wrinkled Knees - like, this is textual, right? It's just there, in the story, and it's fascinatingly strange.

The 70s were notably lacking in quality animated work, so this film's dedication to hand-drawn, fluid and bizarre visuals makes it a must-see for quirky cartoon fans. There's a dream-like oddness coursing through this film, taking cues from Alice in Wonderland with the "voyage from one surreal situation to the next" plot.

Second half is limp except for the tickle fight, but the first half is awesome. The Camel's song is wonderful, even if it's depressing as hell! Extra points for the Winsor McCay homage.

(35mm Restoration by Bernhardt and Gilchrist) A terrific assault on the senses. Near-back-to-back musical numbers and animation for the sake of animation. Probably worth seeing for the effort on display alone, now relegated to obscurity and likely trapped in a copyright quagmire after a brief theatrical run and limited home media release.

I remember I was devastated when my dad taped over this movie with a football game. I was pissed. Now I can't find it anywhere. I think it was good, but I can't remember.

My favorite movie as a child. It probably would still be if I could still watch it. It's criminal this isn't available on DVD.
