One of the greats. Sometimes I hate to admit liking Spielberg, but this is perhaps the most perfect action/adventure film ever made. I saw it at least three times in the theater, and in my recollection it seems more like 7 or 8. Classic characters, snappy dialogue, and above all, non-stop thrills. It's unbelievable how much stuff happens in under two hours. Barely a second is wasted.

This movie is undoubtedly one of the most awesome action films on celluloid. Sure he single-handedly has skewed the public's mental image of an archaeologist probably forever, but at least he did it by taking the Nazi's down a couple pegs. It's hard to find movies as fun as this one. You get one of the most awesome heroes, team him up with a heroine who can out drink a Nepalese man, add the awesome music of John Williams and you have yourself a god-damned winner.

Possibly the greatest adventure film to date. Indiana Jones is one of America's favorite fictional heroes, and Harrison Ford is at his best as the swash-buckling, whip-cracking archeologist. It defines the action/adventure genre of film, and it's a blast every time you see it. A true classic! Awesome!

Most certainly this is action/adventure movie perfection. Harrison Ford's best role, in my opinion, is that of Indiana Jones, the capable but fallible intelligent adventurer and archeologist. Not a single moment in Raiders of the Lost Ark is dull; from start to finish the film is pure entertainment. It's humorous, it's exciting and it's fun. No other film manages to perfectly mesh all these elements together with such finesse as Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark. Fantastic movie.

A true classic that instills the sense of awe and wonder with just a touch of whimsy to create the perfect action/adventure movie. Top that off with Harrison Ford who is the absolute perfect fit for the role of Indy. His unique blend of charisma, deadpan skill for comedy, a penchant for trouble and his everyman qualities elevates this film to another level. The first and best in the series.

Outstanding, rip-roaring adventure still feels fresh and contemporary 30+ years later, anchored by Ford's authoritative, iconic performance as a kind of messy, capable but clumsy everyman spin on Bond, and the directorial smarts of Spielberg who keeps things moving at a break-neck speed while stopping just shy of exhausting his audience. Atmospheric photography and vivid location shooting also a definite plus. If the plotting is a little thin at times, it would seem foolish to complain.

Ford's "Indy" Jones is the coolest movie hero of all time. Fact. I mean, who didn't want to grow up to be this guy? Williams' sweet adventure tunes. Spielberg's elaborate setpieces and his lighthearted many-gags-a-minute approach. Awesome, iconic, brilliant, nostalgia-cueing. A classic.

They set out to make the ultimate adventure movie and they succeeded. It's got a rousing John Williams theme song, a man getting shredded to death by an airplane propellor, snakes, chases, a bullwhip, Nazi villains, a hilarious, lighthearted touch, a monkey, Karen Allen being fiery and feisty and too goddamn hot for words, and Harrison Ford, the most charismatic and engaging lead of all time. What more does a growing boy need?

So fun, I'm going to embarrass myself and call it a "fun-filled romp", molded and shaped by some expert craftsmen. Harrison Ford really had his fastball working in this one. Man, do I feel bad for kids today. I got to grow up on the Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark, and all they have is bad Pirates of the Caribbean sequels and Transformers. Blech.

If there is action and adventure better than this, I don't know about it. The "chase" scene involving trucks full of Nazis and relics and Indiana on a horse is the definition of awesome. Indy's reaction to being shot is one of the most brilliant moments in action movie history.

Under "action movie," see Raiders of the Lost Arc. If there's any one role that could make people forget Harrison Ford as Han Solo, this is it. Just non-stop fun and adventure, start to finish. Most underrated moment is the discussion of the arc at the college--the calm before the storm.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is the paramount example of adventure movies. Though it falls slightly short compared to Star Wars it's really quite different in its own way and offers a lot of comical depth that most adventure movies don't have. The perfect adventure film! Harrison Ford is unforgettable as the intelligent and charming archaeologist who will stop at nothing to protect the ancient relics of the world. It takes cues from classic 1940s westerns and treasure-hunting movies and combines their best traits with electric humor, rowdy excitement and a compelling story. Add a notoriously brilliant soundtrack, flawlessly executed action sequences and a stellar cast? You get this gem. Dr. Jones never lets up and never lets you down.

Absolutely perfect movie in every pertinent sense. One of the few movies that seems like actual magic, not even cinema. I'm not sure if it was Spielberg's adventurous vision, Lucas's story ideas (in his infinitely better days), Williams's riveting score, Ford's best performance, or even Kasdan's script. Without doubt, and I am always sure of it, the truck chase toward the end is the best action sequence in film history. This film should be mandatory viewing!

Probably the best action adventure movie ever. My only criticism is that Lucas and Spielberg chose to build it into a franchise and then sequelize it into the ground to cash in on it(see also "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Gale"). Still constantly entertaining even after probably hundreds of viewings (i'm pretty sure I saw it 32 times in the theater when it came out).

One of my favourite action-adventure movies. Harrison Ford's character (forget his name) isn't particularly heroic, he's simply very talented and rugged. The sword vs. gun scene sends me into hysterics every time I see it (and apparently it wasn't in the script!). It's just excellent, fast-paced fun for the entire film.

The Raiders of the Lost Ark is probably my favourite childhood film and I love it still. For complete escapism and adventure this is arguably Steven Spielberg's best film. Harrison Ford is perfect and the supporting cast is strong too. The edge of of your seat action and set pieces are some the finest to ever be put on screen and the timeless score rousingly thumps. The Indiana Jones films never fail to excite me and I can't wait to watch them time and time again with my own children.

Like the serials, but much better done. A fair bit on the juvenile side if you see it as a grownup, but too much fun for that to matter much... and let us not forget that, whatever its pulp origins, this is a much more original film than most of the stuff that was around at the time

(2nd viewing) At first (opening scene aside), the film/its humour are tedious and silly (truck exploding for no apparent reason, getting hit over the head with a frying pan,...), John Williams seems to recycle bits from Star Wars, and watching an archaeologist stick it to the bad guy left me oddly indifferent. A shame you have to await the 50 minute mark for the story and characters to become really absorbing. A lot of fun as a whole, doesn't hold a candle to the original Star Wars though.

I always thought there must be a Twilight equivalent for boys, and there you go. With a main character, who has nothing to say, so you can substitute himself easily with yourself, a damsel in distress in risqué out of place dressing whose main purpose is to be saved, and over the top nonsensical adventure scenes, swinging ropes and climbing submarines, it feeds the monkey brain. And the worst thing is - it does that deliberately. A purposefully dumbed down idea built in the lab for consumption.

You have got to love Indiana Jones films don't you? Perfectly involving, cheeky, action packed, and so damn exciting. It would be hard to think of a set of films that better capture the excitement of a round the world treasure hunt against Nazis! This must be the most emulated format for a film in history, but nothing has come anywhere close to this masterpiece. I mean if Lara Croft saw this film, she would be hit by a massive and instant existential crisis. She'd need years of therapy.

I didn't see Raiders until I was almost in high school, but I wish I had seen it much earlier. It's a classic, the bar by which all action adventure movies must be measured. It's a perfect blend of humor, emotion, excitement, and a little bit of horror. Yes, the characters are archetypes, but in a good way; we know and understand a great deal more about them than the movie has time to tell us. It's not the weightiest movie ever made, but it's definitely the most fun.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark" is a large-scale, big-budget cheesefest. It has snakes, spiders, ancient tombs and mysterious arks. It even has evil, exploding Nazis. If it had been made in 2010 by Michael Bay with better FX and Shia LaBeouf as Jones, it would have been appreciated for the trashy guilty pleasure that it is. It's a ridiculous, unnecessarily bloody, hilariously over-the-top camp adventure. Is it the best of its kind? Yes, it is. Is it entertaining as hell? For the most part, yes, it is.

It's obviously a true classic! Indiana Jones is such an iconic character, and it's great to see how it all started. Well acted, well produced, well written, great film! Fun, funny, intriguing, adventurous, romance, all in one delightful movie! Jones is a great hero, and the plot makes for a great story. I was a tad confused by the PG rating... it didn't really strike me as PG (more of a PG-13, but closer to the PG side than the R side). Highly entertaining, and a must-see movie classic!

One more childhood movie revisited. First thing - in my memories it wasn't that gruesome. I mean melting faces in mass entertainment flick deserves some kudos. Other thing - I think it's overrated. Yes, it is great entertainment, not overridden with clichés (at that time). But it's not much more than a straightforward movie with good guys winning against bad guys.

A perfect movie, if there ever was one. There are no pretentious undertones, no "big message", and nothing else to drag down the pure joy of the experience. The action and humor blend flawlessly, and there isn't a weak link amongst the cast. The best praise I can give "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is that watching it makes me feel like I'm nine years old again, with a smile still on my face even after the end credits roll.

Saw this for the first time since I was ten years old with a live orchestra. It was incredible. It's really funny how the movie would have worked out exactly the same way had they never done anything though. Not my kind of flick, and I've probably been spoiled a bit by modern moviemaking techniques (like I found Tintin way more exciting, sorry everyone), but Jones is an excellent protagonist who, with both the script and performance, elevates the entire movie.

Fun, spirited romp (although it's a cliche to even use such a word). You shouldn't think too deeply about what's going on (how can hundreds of snakes survive in a thousand year old chamber deep in the desert? Is it really feasible to be a stowaway on the OUTSIDE of a submarine? Etc.) On the other hand - everything is so quick and smooth you don't have time to think much ;-) And there are som truly outstanding kick-ass action sequences!

The ultimate adventure film and fun movie experience. Despite offering practically nothing of discernible substance (the closest thing this comes to making a statement is that Nazis fucking suck), this may be impossible not to love. Well directed, well acted, well scored, well written, this is everything a blockbuster should aspire to be.

This adventure film is basically a B -film filmed by A -list professionals and budget. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were influenced by adventure series from the 30's with hair-rising cliffhangers and fantastic villains. It's succesfull and Indiana Jones as a character played by Harrison Ford is original and charismatic. One critique though: is it really necessary to present the violence on an adventure film in such a sadistic and brutal way...I think not.

Non-stop fun from start to finish. Ford's anti-hero archaeologist is a classic character, and the scope of the story and the big action set-pieces make for a hugely enjoyable ride. It doesn't just pay homage to the 1930s serials it's based on, it takes the best elements of those tales and turns them into something that will be enjoyable for generations to come.

Raiders of the Lost Ark is a very enjoyable movie. It has plenty of action, adventure and comedy, set to a brisk pace and with enough interesting characters to keep us engaged. It brings us a villain we can easily rally against, a MacGuffin that everyone will go to the ends of the for, and enough creative action scenes to make you say "wow," a couple of times every half hour. You owe it to yourself to see this movie so that you can have a very fun two hours of escapism.

This movie makes very little sense in terms of plot; has very flat characterization; contains a 1930s level of fucked-up-ness about race, nationality, gender, animal welfare, and how okay it is to kill people if they're in your way; and ends with a literal deus ex machina - but is also *incredibly* good at creating a sense of sheer giddy fun. Modern filmmakers could learn a lot from this about making adventure movies compelling - and about what happens if you don't critique what you homage.

Aspires to be nothing more than brainless entertainment, which is fine, but considering its reputation I was expecting a little more substance. The action sequences are top notch, but the story is paper-thin (Hunt the MacGuffin) and the characters are all incredibly one-dimensional. Also find it a bit strange that the 4th film gets mauled for being unrealistic when this has the ending it does.

aside from all the obvious lovable stuff, there's things that always outright bothered me. why is there no score whatsoever in the barfight? the scene's whole sound design, complimented by dry as fuck editing, is so weird, it seems unfinished. why is the intro journey executed so layered and arduously, when indy runs back to the plane in mere seconds? how the hell did he attach himself to a fully submerged submarine? i really love this, but there are so many avoidable incoherencies.

Solid, timeless adventure classic. Choreography and pacing holds up really well, and it's as close to "nonstop action" as one can get. Temple of Doom has a sort of grander scope but fails with its overboard campiness, IMO. And Karen Allen as Marion is a much more appealing characther than any other supporting cast that's shown up in the series.

So much fun it can be quite hard to find faults with this homage to 30s adventure serials - although I'd argue there are a few dips in the otherwise breakneck pacing which kind of take you out of the film, but it's very inventive and fast and every action scene is iconic in it's own right. Great characters, an excellent score, and some fantastic art direction. I mean what can you say differently? It's glorious!

When I saw this movie as a kid I found it boring. But I know it's a classic. I even saw someone buy a VHS copy of the movie for $99 (This is back in VHS infancy and movies cost that much). I probably like it a little better now, but I still found it boring. Comically cheesy 80s movie. I suppose I just don't like these kind of movies. I also didn't like Mad Max which everyone gushed over.

Not since Star Wars has the spirit of the serial adventures of old been so well captured as Raiders of the Lost Arc. The character of Indiana Jones perfectly embodies the dreams of many youths, who love the idea of being a hero and having a life of adventure. That's what this movie is: classic adventure. It's exciting, and the action sequences are a thrill and are executed well. On top of that, it's also very witty and surprisingly funny, and Harrison Ford is perfect and iconic in the lead role.

'Raiders of the Lost Ark' can best be described as an iconic masterpiece that adds everything a classic needs. Back in 1981, this movie startled audiences with amazing action sequences and still do today, in one of the all time greatest films. Everything in this movie is iconic from the name of Indiana Jones to the iconic truck chase towards the end of the movie. The film started it all, Raiders of the Lost Ark is non-stop action/adventure reminiscent of the adventure serials of the 1930's and 1940's and we loved every minute of it. This film became a pop culture icon(not unlike another film Ford starred in known as Star Wars) that captured the imaginations of moviegoers even 30+ years after being released in 81. It's a classic film no film aficionado should go without seeing and is well worth it.

Spielberg's most complete summer blockbuster is an original, exciting adventure movie that introduced the world to one of cinema's most iconic protagonists in Indiana Jones, who, thanks to the sensational performance of Harrison Ford, perfectly embodies the ultimate American hero. With Ford's idealistic hero Indiana Jones at the helm here comes loads of life-or-death globetrotting adventure-action that's able to flow smoothly from gun fights in burning-down bars in Nepal to frantic car chases in the deserts of Egypt (only the supernatural-tinged climax feels a little out of place). There's nothing else terribly compelling here (only a few funny one-liners) but it's so jam-packed full of exotic excitement (even when you think it's over) that it doesn't really matter.

I always worry about going back to movies I grew up enjoying. Will they be as good as I remembered or fall short? I'm happy to say that I found this just as enjoyable as I remember. So many iconic scenes, great characters, great score, just a lot of fun all around. Sure it may be a little cheesy and be terrible at theology, but I'm not sure that they really cared about these things. It does have some pretty disturbing imagery though so be warned if you're not into that.

Duly iconic and full of great moments, but racism and sexism soured the punch for me. The men-with-sexy-white-dresses-stored-away-for-just-this-eventuality to actual-women ratio was shocking (I mean, 2:1, but still), and I guess it was the Hebrew god at the end there? Who can say. Undeniably influential and still enjoyable, but not great.

I don't know if "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" is a technically perfect film. I don't know if it could be considered a masterclass of cinema or anything along those lines. But what I do know is that the reason Indiana Jones has stayed with moviegoers for so long is because his debut adventure is a whirlwind of a film, a wonderfully campy and unforgettably composed send up to the action-adventure serials of days gone by, and an immediately iconic and joyously simple romp. Why did it have to be snakes?
