Pleasant, sweet natured tween fantasy has an effective, amiable performance from Duff to wear down cynical defenses; frequent dips into sticky wholesomeness are somewhat tempered by not-quite-right-angle interjections from De Mornay, the most compelling character here. The initial galvanizing incident seems like unnecessarily grim overkill (pun somewhat intended); wasn’t her father’s disapproval motivation enough? Better than passable, though not essential for those outside the target audience.

Raise Your Voice-is so pure at heart that, even with its over-the-top moments and cliches, one is willing to forgive the flaws and admire all that it achieves. The climax, set during the music program's solo showcases, sees Terri getting up in front of a large crowd, putting down her defenses and insecurities, and winningly performing a song that she dedicates to her brother. It's a fairly enchanting moment because it means something more to Terri and to the viewer than the genre usually garners

It's hard to find an article written about Hilary Duff that doesn't mention her squeaky clean image. "Wholesome as a glass of milk," as the Atlanta Journal Constitution recently called her. For the most part, the role of Terri Fletcher allows Duff to retain that tween-friendly image. She loves deeply, encourages the underdog, is hard-working and committed, doesn't smoke or drink and keeps the guy-girl thing pure. (pluggedin.com)

"As if anticipating his own death, Hilary Duff's brother crams 50 years' worth of love into a period of one week and the effect is not unlike watching a teenage boy wack off to The Lizzie McGuire Movie." - Ed Gonzalez
