I literally spent the whole of this movie wishing I were watching Harvey Keitel's "Bad Lieutenant" instead. There's no denying the strength of Harrelson's performance, but the movie's annoyingly standoffish and self-satisfied in its trendy amoral bleakness, not to mention grating in its barrage of stark stylistic "flourishes." Flicks like this have gotta have a point or purpose aside from sheer straightforward miserablism, and this one doesn't. Not that I could tell, anyway.

Pointless, watered down Bad Lieutenant 'bent cop' stuff with added family drama and distracting camerawork. Harrelson is well-cast and has the 'grizzled but tormented asshole' archetype down pat, but he's wasted in a story that goes absolutely nowhere.

There's plenty to admire here; from Woody's excellent performance, a good support cast & a couple of really brilliantly shot scenes. That said "Rampart" has some significant flaws. We never get under the skin of Harrelson's character, never really learn what he is about, & all of the relationships surrounding him are underdeveloped. It also does that currently trendy thing of having an very ambiguous ending. I'm not against that per-se, but this film never had enough depth to leave you hanging.

Interest starts out high, gradually decreasing until the screen appropriately fades to black. Good performances, but you can't help but wonder if they hadn't rather have had something to say.

(Viewed on 02/08/12): Harrelson impresses as a corrupt cop, and there is a hazy quality to the narrative that seems to complement the character's escalating moral and 'emotional' estragement from his job, his family, his friends, and basically everyday life. This is all done well, distracting jump cuts aside, but there is no dramatic arc, just a collection of disconnected but well made moments that lack real cumulative power and only hang together because of Harrelson's performance.

Solid performances do not save this from becoming a derivative and redundant tale of police corruption. Brings nothing special to the table and fails to tell a convincing or engrossing story.

A rip-roaring character piece that focuses on a man composed of a godawful mixture of animalistic rage and human intelligence who is about as far from grace as is possible. It's not really emotionally engaging tho b/c we don't know enough about the character's past to understand why the h he's like this. We can only speculate. Basically it's purely a frightening spectacle in which Woody Harrelson reaffirms his prowess.

W.Harrelson and a solid supporting cast make this watchable, but scriptwise it comes off as underwhelming and not effectively catchable. *Preview*: #14#, story, cast.

The entire movie is built on Woody's performance, and on that alone it's worthy of a pass and a viewing. I can't say with any kind of confidence that it's a GOOD movie - rather, it's a movie with a large number of scenes which are good on their own, but make for something of an average ensemble. As far as crime dramas go, it's probably a bit above-average, but quite frankly, I found a lot of the other characters to be repetitive and single-minded. Again, flick is made by Woody's performance.

Harrelson gives a great performance, but it doesn't stop the movie from dragging. The story takes an interesting premise and makes it dull. A corrupt cop with a unique family life should be ripe for entertainment but it's not here. Tries to be fancy with some of the cinematography which does more to annoy than impress.

This has quite an ensemble cast surrounding Harrelson who plays a bent cop. Harrelson is one of the few actors who can exude genuine menace and honesty in these types of intense roles. Unfortunately the direction and writing is so hopelessly muddled that it's a wasted effort from the midway point to the end. Instead of going somewhere with this character study it seems to waste too much time with large dramatic scenes which precipitate his character's meltdown.

Admirably restrained portrayal of a corrupt cop. Harrelson as Dave Brown isn't an unhinged badass but a pathetic, beat-down shell of a man, drowning himself in booze and sex while lashing out at the world (though his ex-wives and distant older daughter both have him firmly under their thumbs). The plot is meandering, piecing together moments of his day-to-day life; while this gives a great impression of his character, it's not the most gripping narrative. Still, pretty good.

Harrelson has gotten his second youth and a couple of recently great performances under the belt. He is the sole reason an otherwise pretty dull, but very pretty, film does not crash and burn. The trailer promises way to much and I ended up very dissapointed...

This has got to be the first movie ever where I found myself wishing the lead role was played by Nicolas Cage. That's not to say that Woody Harrelson wasn't a bad-ass character. Hell, he kills a man by letting the guy kick him in the gut so many times, the guy gets tired and collapses with a heart attack. It's just that this movie was crying for a dash of crazy...because without it, the whole experience was soul-numbingly dull.

Harrelson was born to play this part. He's got the chiseled looks and rough attitude to convincingly play a corrupt cop. The film's loose, grimy cinematography is fitting, and I'm glad things didn't get too over the top. This is definitely more of a character study than a "wow, this is one BAD cop!" sort of deal. The ending left me a bit cold, but the more I think about it the more appropriate it seems.

There's certainly merit here, and it's a very well made movie, but it's so unpleasant that I really struggled to even finish it. Harrelson is undeniably wonderful, but I never quite understood his character or how the movie wanted me to feel about him. A tough movie for me to watch, and one that didn't work as well as I was hoping it would.

Frustrating crime drama crippled by a screenplay presenting a character study of a hideously repellent individual, but providing neither context or a driver to help understand this inscrutable man; he is perpetually defined completely by his actions in the moment. A shame because the film is so brilliantly cast and constructed that you can imagine the great and empathetic film that might have been. However, film is worth watching for Harrelson's scorching and painful performance.

Moverman seems to have given Harrelson free rein and for good reason. It's a fascinating character study with a magnetic lead performance even when the plot becomes too convoluted and directionless for its own good.

Harrelson plays a dirty cop, but it's hard to feel no empathy for him, regardless of his racism and illegal acts. I can't say this movie isn't worth a watch because he did a bang up job, but other than one man's acting, this has nothing to offer.

On the surface, a variation on the theme of Ferrara's BAD LIEUTENANT (in which case, why bother?). More generally, however, the film's true theme was one man's gradual realisation that, contrary to what he imagined to be the way things were, most of the power in all his relationships had in fact been seized by the women surrounding him, who had consequently turned against him. This would be to try to say something both about what is kind of interesting about the film, and its limitations.

Shallow-depth-of-field, shaky-cam, ultra-slow, pretentious-as-hell, toronto film fest trash. Has all the hallmarks of a tiff film, complete with lethargic pacing, awful and distracting cinematography, and atrocious non-ending. This style of directing has been done to death and it's grating every time. Woody Harrelson is a great actor and does what he can with the very weak script, but this wreck can't be salvaged. Go watch Brooklyn's Finest instead.

Despite a generally competent cast, the movie itself devolved into something as tiresome, worn-out, and detacted as the dirty cop portrayed by Woody Harrelson. The camera tricks distract instead of impress. Not to mention were a few glaring plot holes too. The idea was not bad though.

Woody Harrelson is great in this movie. Harrelson throws himself into the character and his performance makes the movie worth watching. There supporting cast is also good in this film. The plot is simple but effective. Overall I would recommend this drama.

At times this gritty, intermittently gripping police drama feels like a follow-up to "The Messenger" - not just because of the thematic overlap (both films deal with grief, substance abuse, and self-destructive masculinity), but because Rampart's main character, the cynical, drug-abusing cop played by Woody Harrelson, might be the long-lost twin of the alcoholic Army captain Harrelson played in the earlier Moverman film.

Woody Harrelson is convincing as the jaded and flawed veteran policeman who has slipped into a steady routine of crossing the lines, both in his personal life and on the job. He's skilled at playing the game, and is both charmed and cursed at the same time. Most of the supporting cast is very good. Entertaining and never predictable.

Although the script is based on something more historical, this is basically Oren Moverman's entry into the Bad Lieutenant tradition (after Ferrara and Herzog), where our protagonist is an officer of the law but at the same time a rotten person. It's not as good as theirs were, nor does it match The Messenger. There is nothing too insightful here, I was frequently annoyed by the photography, and felt that it didn't make the most of the cast. It's still a decent movie by a promising filmmaker.

More Woody Harrelson being a dirtbag. I actually saw this awhile ago and all I can remember is Ice Cube (not doing Coors Light ads, yay!) and Brie Larson being a cool, sort of queer teenager. They were both infinitely more interesting than the protagonist. The violent, racist, misogynist central character idea isn't offensive to me, it's just kind of boring.

The moody, naturalistic atmosphere is more important than the foggy plot, as we descend the spiral with a man made of machismo, chauvinism, bigotry and violence, as his increasingly futile efforts to redeem himself result in a cascade of personal demons and self-imposed suffering. The same deliberate calculation that went into casting name actors for small roles to keep the focus on Harrelson goes into several choices throughout Rampart, and though the effect may be frustrating, it feels right.

Harrelson is definitely on his game in what turns out to be one of his best performances. Without any direction, however, the story meanders into something quite dull and rather pointless. This runs on Harrelson's performance alone.
