Edogawa Rampo is a writer whose latest work is censored by the government, deemed too disturbing and injurious to the public to be allowed to be published. However, after burning his drafts, his publisher shows him a newspaper with an account of events just like his forbidden story. As the film progresses, fantasy and reality intermingle in a tale that draws heavily on influences from Poe and Stoker's Dracula. (imdb)

Fascinating surreal drama which feels very Lynchian in its contrasting of the 'actual' and 'created' selves of its characters (LOST HIGHWAY appears to have directly riffed on one key storytelling device). Performers are somewhat redundant here, though Takenaka is a stoic lead, and Hada perfectly embodies fragile beauty. On a first viewing, it is a striking visual and sensory experience, if frustratingly obscure on a narrative level; probably one to return to at some stage.
