It begins well. Really well. But it feels long and my admiration soured as the jokes turned monotonous and the loving western tributes became broad and lame homages. If only Verbinski would have restricted himself to genre conscious moviemaking and cut down on the obvious references. Yet, I have to recommend it. For the voice work. For the denizens of Dust in all their glorious detail and ugliness. And, particularly, for the beautifully realized animation and "camerawork".

"Rango" is a modern, edgy and genuinely weird western full of manic exuberance, as well as loads of (often awkward) pop culture references. The animation is beautiful, the "camerawork" delightfully playful and, although it does settle for the conventional "messages" that every animated film has to convey (hysterically enlisting Clint Eastwood in the process), it remains a fully entertaining and funny cartoon, that never fails to surprise thanks to its wacky dialogue and talented voice cast.

Verbinski's best film to date, a practically flawless western, is an outstanding achievement; Perfect voice cast, gorgeous animation (leaving no doubt that 3D is unnecessary), and a marvellous screenplay which takes itself not seriously at all and just seriously enough make this one hell of a watch. I loved True Grit as much as anyone, but not until Rango was I convinced that the western is truly back. Love it.

Other than about 20 minutes in the middle of the movie, Rango is a consistently funny (computer) animated film. The animation is stunning, leaving me wondering if a couple scenes were actually live-action or not, and the voice cast is top notch. The story isn't anything new for westerns, but it's very fun overall in a more grown up "Fievel Goes West" kind of way. Hearing Timothy Olyphant (who I'm normally not a fan of) voice Clint Eastwood in the desert is worth the price of admission alone.

Manages to be a western homage without being formalistic; to be contemporary without feeling soulless; and most importantly it manages to be an American (non-Pixar) animation, that doesn't cater to the lowest common denominator.

Rango's soul searching adventure unfolds through a series of events that are beyond his wisdom and maturity as he remains completely oblivious to pretty much everything which crosses his path. It slows down in the middle but more than picks itself up in its final, refreshingly mature act. The animation is gorgeously rendered and Verbinski, who may have honed his artistic sensibilities to the fullest, provides more than enough laughs to make it an enjoyable western. Also, leave your kids at home.

The animation is the best I've seen, even beats out Pixar, which is saying a lot. Not just the amazing textures and character design, but the shot composition and action direction are fantastic. The movie is surprisingly weird and mature, relative to what I was expecting from the trailer. The first "kids" movie where I think some of the references went over the heads of a lot of the adults in the theater.

Not the kids movie I was expecting! "Rango" is very smart, self-aware, & satirical. Although the plot is nothing orginal, (in fact it's archetypal Western) Verbinski is very clever in using the films satirical nature to play on & have fun with the very notions of what makes a good Western. The animation & character design is flat-out fucking incredible & is strengthened by an excellent voice cast. Most of all I enjoyed how "Rango" often shied away from easy laughs for something more subtle.

The animation, first off, is amazing; probably the best I've seen from any CGI feature, besting anything even Pixar has done to date. And it's also got a very entertaining story, paying obvious homage to Chinatown and westerns at the same time. The humor is occasionally oddly vulgar, but it's pretty funny on the whole. All in all, damn fine entertainment.

Rango is a surprisingly mature, witty film that managed to blow my expectations away! I can't praise the film's unique animation style enough; seeing the 'ugly-cute' detailed animals, gorgeous desert/Western settings, and stunning 'effect' animations for things like the water were as much a joy as the characters and plot. As for them, the characters are quirky and memorable, and the plot is a love-letter to all things Western, but will still entertain and engage those like me, who have little in

I can't deny that this story has been done before, it's indeed a lot like A Bug's Life (which is a lot like Seven Samurai but hey A Bug's Life was animated). With the general plot being nothing not everything else is very well done. The entire cast is superb and comedic timing is usually spot on with just a few misfires. The animation and character design is very impressive, I've never seen so many disgustingly created characters. Highly recommended.

you can see at the beginning that the filmmakers were striving for something a bit more imaginative than the usual animation, but by the end they largely failed. along with that is an awful polemic objective. what is the defense against progress this time? oh yeah, nostalgia for the old west. there's a thousand valid criticisms of the process of industrialisation, but this conservative nonsense is tiring.

It appears that one of the greatest Westerns ever is animated. Well, why not? In fact, "Rango" has pretty much every characteristic a proper Western should have: gunfights, haunting small towns, bizarre residents, bad guys. Moreover, through "Rango" Zimmer proves once again why he's such a great and renowned composer, while the shots are just stunning and the acting fantastic. "You don't tango with Rango".

Rango has an admirably sick streak and an awesome tactile quality. Only caveat is how it softens the amoral/nihilistic edge of the films to which it's obviously paying homage -- that Noah Cross basically receives his long-awaited comeuppance obliterates the dark potency of Chinatown. Verbinski hits all the notes precisely but misses the music. But I guess I'm asking a bit much from a children's movie...

This movie is the evidence that animated movies are not a genre on its own, but merely a media for movies to be shown in. Rango is an okay animated film, but a GREAT western! Forget all about True Grit bringing back the western, Rango shows how it's surposed to be done. Rango, game, set and match!

One of the better animated movies this decade, Rango falls just short of a "genre" classic. The writing is mostly Pixar-esque in that it defines a sociological framework to relate the fantasy to reality and create a world that's insular where the happenings in it are significant. The CG is unbelievably detailed in texture, giving a grittiness to the western setting. Character designs inform character roles. Long action sequences are a chore and the writing can dip into Dreamworks stupidity.

Probably the best full-length CG-animation to date. Amazing rendering and lighting which make everything to feel like a very expensive live-action movie (bravo, Deakins, once again!) Even though the slapsticky humour is not completely absent, the unorthodox main character and his strange, surreal journey to the obligatory self-discovery can't be further from the generic storylines and caricatures spilling out of every animated movie nowadays. The only let down is Zimmer in the action sequences.

I'm not sure who liked it more at the screening I attended, the squealing kids or the bemused/alarmed adults. Rango's repartee is so rapid-fire and verbose that it is probable that most of those parents grasped only a few gulps and a thimble-full more than their stink-brood. One of the best looking animated movies in ages. Please keep making them in 2D.

An alarmingly adept, modern, and unsuperficial western-comedy. The action scenes are what they are, but the narrative excels: this is clearly more El Topo than Puss in Boots, and its disturbing blend of grotesque imagery and existential foregrounding is moderately shocking, if you went in looking for Stupid. One of those few films where the narrative itself is the real villain - and that's why the unapologetic homaging makes perfect sense.

An animated movie that does EVERYTHING right. It pays tribute to the western while at the same time acknowledging its place in both real history and film history. It has a strong protagonist, a stronger female lead, and character designs that tell you everything about a character just at first glace (right down to Rattlesnake Jake's Angel Eyes mustache). The action scenes have a perfect rhythm, working within both the logic of cartoons and action flicks. Very much a film for adult film buffs.

Why does the female chameleon have hair? And regular eyes? And a tiny mouth? I know, the answer's obvious, but details like that show a lack of unified art direction in this movie. A lot of it really seems to be all over the place. In a good family movie, adults and kids will both like the same things about it, but Rango seems to segregate the appeal into segments only the adults will appreciate and segments only the kids will appreciate. The jokes are not funny, most of the voice acting seems off, and plot is very weak, the characters aren't worth caring about, and many of the scenes seem to have been shoehorned into the story rather than actually having been made for this particular film. Much of the action is useless unfortunately. Somewhat entertaining but should have been much better considering the calibre of people involved in the project.

ILM's done well with their first full-length animated film. This movie is absolutely gorgeous, full of rich, vibrant colours and textures that seem to pop off the screen without the help of 3D (a good thing too, as 3D would only darken and muddy this beauty). The story takes a while to get going, and the movie could use more laughs, but this one seems to be a western first, and a kids film second. And as a western, it truly succeeds. Hard not to like. Has every possible cliche and nothing but cliche, but does it all astoundingly well. The animation, voice acting and music explode with talent and it works on enough levels to easily entertain the whole family. Still, however wide the frame of reference, Rango joins most animated films in playing it safe and sticking to familiar ground, making for a cheap experience with no lasting resonance. Also, I'm sick of anti-business morals from movies grossing $250m at the box office.

I was surprised, no, shocked at how much I was enjoying Rango. Amazing animation, wonderful character designs, spot-on voice acting, cute nods to westerns (and Fear and Loathing!) and a constantly entertaining story. Grade A entertainment.

Verbinski gets tired of Pirates, now he's taking focus on the wild west and created an enjoyable animation flick with a lot of ironic sidekicks on other genre gems."Rango" is not "Fantastic Mr. Fox" or "Where the wild things are" but still a movie, that stands above other boring and heartless animation productions.

Funnier than I thought it would be. The line-up of critters who populate Dirt have to be among the ugliest-cutest animated creatures ever.

This movie was really adorable. I thought that the animation was really great. The music was really catchy and all the characters were so lovable, even the bad guys.
Being a theater nerd, I love how theatrical the character of Rango was. They even put on a little play in the movie and it was hilarious.
I did think that the movie was quite suspect as far as a kids movie goes i.e. kids pointing guns at themselves or placing a gun in their mouth. Depp has a good voice, so does Isla Fisher.

Has a lot of dark humor, which gives the movie a very unique feel.

Great cast, stunning animation, and a quirky sense of humor keep the ball rolling, but most references (my favorite being Fear and Loathing's Duke and Gonzo on their way to, presumably, Vegas) probably just flew over the heads of anyone prepubesant. Early nomination for Best Animated?

It's all about homages and impressive shots, but the Jack Sparrow-inspired character is really boring -- and the rest of the cast is cool as hell. Verbinki's best.

The second time through some of the psychedelic stuff caught me and I enjoyed it quite a bit more. I'm upgrading it to 79 (from 70).

This movie is so much fun to watch. There is definitely a lot more to this movie then just being for kids. There are lot of funny references and Johnny Depp gives a funny vocal performance. I highly recommend this fun animated film!

Rango is a fun animated feature that's full of life, color, energy, charm, and humor. It's also a loving recreation of a bunch of scenes from a lot of different Western films. But because of how derivative it felt, I was often bored because I had seen all of it before. Still, adults will enjoy the references to the more mature films that inspire Rango, while younger viewers will love the action and, of course, the talking animals. It's generally fun, and it looks great, but it needed originality
