The brutality of this sport (which exceeds that shown in THE SMASHING MACHINE in terms of the inevitability of serious injury) is filmed so as to emphasise the feeling of witnessing a sacrificial rite (with some Herzogesque organ music on the soundtrack; the music in general is great), part of a religion that might be America itself. It ends with the suggestion of something even more mysterious, something to do with our relationship to animality or to nature, or to terrestrial existence as such.
