Four short films, based on stories by Japanese mystery writer Rampo Edogawa, explore dark themes of obsession, sex and death. In "Mars Canal," a naked man wanders alone through a swamp recalling a former lover. "Mirror Hell" follows a serial killer with a fixation on hand mirrors. "Caterpillar" centers on a crippled veteran, his sadistic wife and their unhealthy relationship. And in "Crawling Bugs," a chauffeur plots to seduce a starlet.

An extremely bizarre and interesting work. I've never heard of any of these directors (two of which also had a hand in writing) but all four stories have at least some measure of talent to them, and the last two are really quite good. Be prepared for some fetishistic imagery/themes & a low budget feel that sometimes shows. Interesting to note that this is the first thing Kaneko, a manga artist, has ever done in film and it's the most impressive of the anthology.

Gets better as it progresses, but generally disappointing.

All stories were brilliantly directed, well acted and they were nicely tied together with same actors. Mars Canal was kind of a prologue for what's going to be. Episodes are highly perverted horror stories combining sex with disoriented minds. Stories get better more further the movies goes. I found Mirror Hell the weakest link of the three main stories. The output is highly artsy with strong horror effects. Images are more important than fluid stories.

Came for Jissoji's Mirror Hell (which was excellent), walked away with appreciation for Kaneko's incredibly disturbing Crawling Bugs. The other two, I could take or leave -- though some of Mars Canal reminded me a bit of Philippe Grandrieux, at least on the surface.

The movie spends too much of its time trying to be weird without making the story itself interesting or weird.
